Sam Kerr netted for Australia to help her side secure a 2-1 victory in their opening fixture against New Zealand in Tokyo.

It was a positive day all round for the Chelsea players at this summer’s Olympics with victories for Team GB, Sweden, the Netherlands and Australia, while Jessie Fleming’s Canada took a share of the spoils in their clash with hosts Japan.

Team GB 2-0 Chile

Millie Bright and Sophie Ingle helped Team GB get off to a perfect start with a 2-0 victory against Chile. Bright was named in the starting 11 and Ingle came off the bench in the latter stages of the second half.

Goalkeeper Carly Telford was an unused substitute, but Fran Kirby missed out due to a slight knock she picked up in training and reserve Niamh Charles was also not included in the matchday squad.

Team GB thought they had taken the lead after just 10 minutes when Ellen White tapped home from close range, but her effort was ruled out for offside.

Seven minutes later Team GB were ahead. Lucy Bronze found Lauren Hemp at the back post and the Manchester City winger headed the ball to White to poke home the opener.

Blues midfielder Ingle entered the action with just over 20 minutes to play, coming on for midfielder Kiera Walsh.

Team GB soon doubled the lead as White volleyed home a Bronze cross to score her second goal of the game and secure the three points.

Sweden 3-0 USA

Sweden secured a silver medal at the London Olympics in 2016 and they certainly proved they are strong contenders to go one step further this time around after an impressive 3-0 victory against the USA.

Chelsea defender Jonna Andersson was named in the starting 11 for Sweden, but Blues skipper Magda Eriksson and goalkeeper Zecira Musovic were not included in the matchday squad.

Former Chelsea player Crystal Dunn was named in the USA starting line-up, while Hedvig Lindahl was in goal for Sweden.

It was Sweden who started the better and they took the lead on 25 minutes when Stina Blackstenius provided a headed finish at the front post.

USA, who are ranked number one in the world, found themselves 2-0 down 10 minutes into the second half when Blackstenius netted her second goal of the game.

Former Manchester United player Christen Press hit the post with 20 minutes remaining but seconds later substitute Linda Hurtig headed in a third for Sweden to seal an emphatic victory.

Japan 1-1 Canada

Fleming started for Canada in the centre of midfield and her side got their opening fixture off to the perfect start when Christine Sinclair tapped home from close range with five minutes on the clock.

Five minutes into the second half and Japan were awarded a penalty after a foul from goalkeeper Stephanie Labb. The goalkeeper made amends for her error by saving the resulting penalty from Tanaka Mina to keep the score at 1-0.

With seven minutes remaining, Mana Iwabuchi equalised for the host nation and with neither side able to find a winner, it ended all square.

Zambia 3-10 Netherlands

New Blues signing Aniek Nouwen lined up in central defence as the Netherlands secured a 10-3 victory against Zambia.

Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema scored a first half hat-trick, Lieke Martens netted a double and Shanice van de Sanden also got on the scoresheet to give the Netherlands a 6-1 lead at the break.

Miedema got her fourth goal early on in the second half before Jill Roord, Lineth Beerensteyn and Victoria Pelova all got in the action to extend their lead even further. Zambia pulled two goals back when Barbra Banda netted her second and third goal of the game.

Chelsea defender Nouwen was replaced by Kika van Es with five minutes remaining as the Netherlands ran out 10-3 winners.

Australia 2-1 New Zealand

Australia opened the scoring with 20 minutes played and it was Kerr’s cute backheel that set up Tameka Yallop for the opening goal.

Less than 15 minutes later and Australia doubled their lead with Kerr adding a goal to her assist.

The Blues forward got on the end of a cross from Steph Catley and her header bounced off the inside of the crossbar and into the net to make it 2-0.

Gabriella Rennie netted a goal in stoppage time for New Zealand but it was too little too late and Australia secured the victory.

The next round of action follows this Saturday.
