Widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, Berger has been an integral part of the Chelsea squad since joining from Birmingham in 2019.

The new contract caps an incredible 12 months for the German international, with the 30-year-old clinching the Barclays FA Women’s Super League Golden Glove award after keeping 12 clean sheets in 17 games as the Blues secured our second consecutive WSL title.

Berger also played a major role in getting Chelsea to our first-ever Champions League final with one of her highlights coming in the first leg of our round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid in which Berger pulled off two penalty saves to help Chelsea progress.

On signing her extension, Berger said: ‘I’m really happy to stay here for longer. The players, the team and the staff, they make me a better player so there’s no reason why I should want to go anywhere else.’

General manager Paul Green added: ‘We are delighted to extend Ann’s contract until at least 2024. She’s had a terrific couple of seasons at the club and has played a big part in the team’s recent success.

‘Ann’s an important player for us and has proven herself to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world with her performances. We feel that she is now coming into her peak as a goalkeeper and look forward to seeing how she continues to develop her game in the upcoming years.’

This is the second announcement for the Blues this week with youngster Aggie Beever-Jones signing her first full-time contract yesterday.
