Jessie Fleming scored two penalties to help Canada win gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
Fleming first netted a spot-kick in normal time to equalise for Canada before she converted again in the penalty shoot-out as her side secured victory over Sweden.
The Blues midfielder becomes the first Chelsea Women’s player to win gold and is only the second Chelsea player to be crowned an Olympic champion.
Vivian Woodward was the last Chelsea player to win gold when Great Britain men were crowned Olympic champions in 1912.
Magda Eriksson started for Sweden and it was her side who took the lead just after the half-hour mark.
With 25 minutes remaining, Canada were awarded a penalty after Christine Sinclair was brought down in the box.
Fleming, who converted her spot-kick in Canada’s semi-final penalty shoot-out victory over the USA, stepped up once again and sent former Blues goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl the wrong way to make it 1-1.
Sweden made three changes with 15 minutes remaining, which saw Jonna Andersson come off the bench and Eriksson withdrawn from the action.
However, neither side could find a winner in normal time and with both teams then unable to break the deadlock in extra-time, the final would be decided on penalties.
Fleming was up first for Canada and the Blues midfielder converted her penalty.
Andersson failed to net in sudden death but Canada converted from 12 yards to secure Olympic glory for the first time in their history.
Sam Kerr was in action on Thursday as Australia took on USA in the bronze medal match.
The Blues striker pulled her side level on 17 minutes after Megan Rapinoe had given USA an early lead, but it wasn’t enough as Australia fell to a 4-3 defeat. Kerr’s goal went down in history as the Chelsea number 20 is now the Matildas' all-time leading goalscorer.
Congratulations to all of our players who took part in the tournament. We can’t wait to welcome you back to Cobham!
