The German saw Marcos Alonso, Christian Pulisic and Trevoh Chalobah grab the goals that grounded the Eagles on the opening day and reflected afterwards on a good day all round.

‘It’s never perfect and we can always find something to improve on but I’m very happy with what we did today,’ he said.

‘We pushed some players over the limit physically, especially after playing 120 minutes in midweek, but it was a very good game from us from start to finish.

‘We were deserved winners and I congratulate the team for the way they pushed themselves. We worked hard and it was a good win to start the season.’

With fitness levels still not 100 per cent, the boss was happy with the strong effort of his players out on the pitch…

‘We were pretty sharp but I think it perhaps looked easier than it actually was. Players stepped up again for us after a tough game in the Super Cup but this is what we expect the level to be for us.

‘We want to set our standards as high as possible and always strive to be at that level. We did very well today but it is only a start and we need to build on this. It was a huge team effort, both defensively and offensively, and I’m very happy with what we did today.’

Chalobah scored on his Premier League debut and there were admiring words in particular for the young defender, as well as the Chelsea Academy…

‘Trevoh will get all the praise today and it’s so deserved. He’s played a lot of games in pre-season, he came through almost 90 minutes against Arsenal and Tottenham, then he played 120 against Villarreal and then another 90 today.

‘He scored a fantastic goal and we are all so happy for him. It’s amazing how these things work out in football. It was very enjoyable and well-deserved.

‘He played alongside Reece James and Mason Mount in the end, which shows how strong our Academy is. We love to see young players take their chance, it’s what our supporters want to see and it is why we love football - seeing that mix of quality young players alongside strong senior players.’

Tuchel assessed our position in the title race this season…

'I see ourselves as number four last year so we cannot be favourites. We just have to close the gap to number three, number two and number one so this is what we're trying to do.

‘I think we have to hunt the others from day one. This is what we want to do, this is our mentality and we are never shy to fight for the best outcome possible but the reality is we are not the favourites right now.'

Tuchel also commented on social media abuse and the club's new Say No To Hate anti-racism video, launched ahead of today's game

'I am concerned because social media has a huge influence, and the abuse on social media has a horrible influence on anybody, not only on football players. We back and support every action from our owner and the club. We support any action against online abuse, and abuse in any sense.

'I don’t use social media but we are very aware of the problems that come with it. We will never stop pushing against it.'
