Millie Bright scored her first two goals for England, Bethany England headed home for the Lionesses and Magdalena Eriksson hit the target for Sweden. Melanie Leupolz struck superbly for Germany, while Erin Cuthbert got Scotland underway with an impressive long-range effort. Sam Kerr earned 100 caps for Australia last night in a friendly against the Republic of Ireland.

Luxembourg 0 England 10

England thumped Luxembourg 10-0 in their second Group D match last night. The Lionesses have got off to a dazzling start under new coach Sarina Wiegman having now netted 18 goals in two matches! Bright retained her starting place in England’s backline, with Fran Kirby being named in the starting XI too. England came on in the second half, while Niamh Charles, Jess Carter and Carly Telford were not involved at all.

It didn’t take Wiegman’s side long to get into the swing of things with Manchester City’s Ellen White hitting a brace early on. Kirby, who played on the right of a midfield three, had the responsibility of taking corners, and assisted the next two goals. The first was nodded in by Arsenal’s Nikita Parris at the near post and the second was volleyed home courtesy of Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood.

Greenwood extended the lead in the second half when she tried her luck from range which deflected off a Luxembourg player to beat the keeper. Jessica Berscheid directed the ball into her own net, Bright headed powerfully home to open her England account and soon made it two with minutes left on the clock on her 40th appearance. Rachel Daly scored the ninth of the night from six yards out, and the Blues No.9 capped off a ruthless performance by steering in a Parris cross.

Next up for England is a visit from Northern Ireland at Wembley Stadium in October.

Scotland 4 Faroe Islands 0

Scotland and Erin Cuthbert thumped the Faroe Islands in their first ever qualifier at Hampden Park to maintain a perfect start to their World Cup bid.

Our Scot continued her fine form and opened the scoring in Glasgow with a stunning left-footed strike from 25 yards out. Scotland’s lead was extended shortly after when Chloe Arthur nodded home two goals in the space of six minutes. Christy Grimshaw and Jenna Clark both notched their first goals for their country, Martha Thomas finished well and Claire Emslie curled home a free-kick with minutes left on the clock.

Scotland sit second in Group B, behind Spain on goal difference, and will host Hungary in October.

Sweden 4 Georgia 0

Chelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson played the full 90 minutes on the left side of a back three for Sweden last night. Blues keeper Zecira Musovic remained on the bench, while Jonna Andersson was not named in the matchday squad. The match finished 4-0 to the Scandinavians at Gothenburg’s Gamla Ullevi – the stadium which staged our Champions League final last season – with Eriksson getting on the scoresheet.

Sweden took the lead after 40 minutes through Filippa Angeldal and Eriksson doubled their advantage in added time at the end of the first half when she poked home a free-kick taken by Nathalie Bjorn of Everton. Caroline Segar calmly converted from the spot after the referee gave a penalty following a foul on Eriksson in the 84th minute, and the Chelsea defender turned provider for her team-mate once again when Sweden’s skipper notched the fourth in added time.

Sweden have won both of their opening Group A games and will travel to Dublin to take on Republic of Ireland in October.

Germany 5 Serbia 1

Germany defeated Serbia 5-1, making it two wins from two in their 2023 World Cup qualifying campaign. Bayern Munich forward Lea Schuller cancelled out Serbia’s early goal by firing in four fantastic second-half goals and Chelsea midfielder Melanie Leupolz came off the bench in the latter stages of the match to net a superb long-range effort, which blasted into the top right corner. Blues goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was an unused substitute. Germany sit top of Group H and will play Israel in October next.

Azerbaijan 0 Denmark 8

Pernille Harder and Denmark maintained their perfect start to the World Cup qualifiers having secured an emphatic 8-0 win against Azerbaijan in Group E. It took Denmark just three minutes to break the deadlock in Baku through Lyon’s Signe Bruun. The Danes went into half-time 4-0 up following a brace from Stine Larsson and an Azerbaijan own goal. Larsen notched a hat-trick in the 60th minute, with Bruun netting her second of the evening two minutes later. The seventh and eighth came in a space of a minute with Millie Gejl and Emma Snerle getting in on the act.

Denmark have maximum points in Group E and are currently ahead of Russia due to goal difference. Harder and her team take on Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro in October’s international break.

Kosovo 0 Norway 3

Guro Reiten played the whole match on the left-hand side of a front three for Norway against Kosovo. The Norwegians had taken an early lead after their opposition netted an own goal, Rosenborg’s Julie Blakstad extended the lead ahead of half-time with a left-footed finish at the far post and Lisa-Marie Utland slotted her close-range effort beyond the Kosovo keeper to make it 3-0. Norway have also had a perfect start to their World Cup qualification and will face Poland and Belgium next in Group F.

Estonia 0 Wales 1

Sophie Ingle skippered Wales to another victory in Group I as they continue their hopes of securing a place in the Women’s World Cup finals for the first time. Tash Harding of Reading struck early on to score the only goal of the encounter to seal the three points. Although Wales dominated the game, having 78 per cent of possession in total, Gemma Grainger’s side were left frustrated after missing a host of chances throughout.

This victory means they are second in the group standing behind France, but level on points. Wales will look to be more clinical when they travel to Slovenia and take on Estonia on home soil next month.

Iceland 0 Netherlands 2

The Netherlands and Aniek Nouwen returned to winning ways last night as they beat Iceland 2-0 with Lyon’s Danielle Van de Donk and Manchester United’s Jackie Groenen getting a goal apiece. They are level with Czech Republic on four points in Group C and will meet Cyprus and Belarus next month.

Rep of Ireland 3 Australia 2

Sam Kerr marked a special milestone last night reaching her 100th cap for her country, but it was perhaps an occasion the Chelsea forward will not want to remember after being defeated 3-2 in a friendly versus Ireland.

The Matildas are hosts of the 2023 Women’s World Cup alongside New Zealand, therefore they have gained automatic qualification to the tournament. Kerr and her team were a goal down in a matter of minutes in Dublin after a free-kick from Birmingham’s Lucy Quinn bounced off the post and past Mackenzie Arnold in goal. Mary Fowler equalised on 13 minutes with a low drilled shot to beat Courtney Brosnan in the Irish goal. Ireland reclaimed the lead through Denise O’Sullivan but Fowler ensured the Matildas went into the break level. The Irish started the second half the brighter side and notched the winner five minutes into the second half courtesy of Birmingham skipper Louise Quinn.

There is one more match taking place on Thursday as Ji So-Yun and South Korea continue their AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualification campaign against Uzbekistan.

The Blues will return back to Cobham to prepare for Sunday’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester United. The match kicks off at 12:30pm and is available to watch on BBC Two.
