It was some way for the attacking midfielder to end his barren run in front of goal, dating back to our win over Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League semi-final second leg. Yesterday he sublimely put us ahead against Norwich with a pinpoint finish from the edge of the box, and then collected two very late goals to complete a maiden hat-trick in Chelsea colours.

Mount had achieved that feat for both Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County during his loan spells there, but had not managed even a brace in blue until yesterday, when he went one better!

‘I felt like I was getting in the positions to score, but I wasn’t putting it in the back of the net,’ assessed Mount of his lean spell.

‘I thought there was going to be a game when it was going to come off, and that was it! Before the game I put pressure on myself to get on the scoresheet because it’s been quite a long time since I did, and then three come around in the same game!

‘I don’t think I’ve ever scored more than one in a game for Chels so it’s a massive moment for me to get three, and I’ll remember this one for a long time. To score three at home at Stamford Bridge is special.

‘The ball will be up in the house somewhere, definitely,’ added Mount. ‘I’ll be framing it, framing the shirt and keeping it for memories.’

Analysing his goals in more detail, Mount acknowledged he did have the rub of the green for his second in particular. Tim Krul saved his spot-kick but had left his line too early in doing so, giving the 22-year-old another chance from 12 yards.

‘The first penalty was awful, it was nowhere near the corner. I think luck was on my side, I got to take it again. It’s a strange one because you don’t want to go the same way, so I just thought I would go down the middle.

‘The third goal I thought might have been offside when I looked up and saw the check, I was praying and it was my lucky day. The team as well, it’s not just about me, the way we started. I spoke before the game about intensity, the early kick-off, being at it from the beginning, and we were.

‘We were on it throughout the whole game, even being up going into the second half, we never stopped, we never dropped our standards.’
