Reece James is currently away on England international duty but it is his Chelsea club form that has been making headlines, with the wing-back speaking about how highly his recent performances are being rated.
Sky Sports has published its latest Power Rankings form chart based on the last five Premier League games and it has James at the top, ahead of Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe and Liverpool’s Mo Salah. The broadcaster calculates its rankings from 35 different statistics including goals, assists, blocks and tackles. James scored three times in that period and assisted for Kai Havertz’s goal against Burnley and one of Mason Mount’s versus Norwich. He also helped Chelsea to three clean sheets in that period.‘At this moment in time, this is probably the best I've performed,’ James confirmed when asked about his ranking.‘Recent results and performances show that as well. Our team is performing well, creating a lot of chances and we have great players around us.
‘When you're playing week in week out and you're playing well and the team's performing, keeping clean sheets and winning games in style, obviously it helps build everyone’s confidence.’James explained the influence of Thomas Tuchel on his current form.‘Our formation has changed, what he demands from the players has changed,’ he said. ‘He wants everyone to kind of be attacking and be non-stop constantly attacking the box, and I think that's helped the season so far.’
The player second to James in Sky Sports’ latest ranking, Smith Rowe, is a late addition to the current England squad, but James explained he has a past with the now Gunners attacking midfielder when they were back in the Chelsea Academy.
‘I've always known him as a top player,’ James said. ‘He came to Chelsea when he was quite young. I remember playing with him and playing against him even when he moved to Arsenal. I think this season he has shown how good he is and why he has been selected.’
