Ahead of tomorrow’s big match against Juventus, we break down how Chelsea can qualify for the Champions League round of 16 and what we need to do to come first in the group…

The Blues have the chance to book our place in the next stage of Europe’s elite competition at Stamford Bridge on matchday five, against the Italian side who are one of only two teams to have defeated us this term. There is still work to do, though…

How can Chelsea qualify on Tuesday night?

If we avoid defeat against Juventus, we will qualify for the round of 16 in second place. We will also advance to the last 16 if Zenit do not beat Malmo in Sweden on Tuesday night.

If we lose tomorrow, and Zenit win, we can still qualify by avoiding defeat in Russia in a fortnight’s time.

How can Chelsea finish top of the group?

By finishing top, we would in theory receive a kinder draw in the round of 16, although that is far from guaranteed with the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Inter Milan currently sitting in second place.

To have any chance of finishing top of the group, we must first beat Juventus on Tuesday night.

If we beat Juventus by one goal

If we win by a one-goal margin (say 1-0, or 2-1) then, presuming we finish level on points after the final matchday, the group would be decided by goal difference.

This is because our head-to-head record in the games between us and Juve (points, goal difference, goals scored) would be identical following our 1-0 loss in Turin. Our goal differences would both be plus six heading into the final matchday. The next tiebreaker is goals scored.

The 'away goals' rule no longer applies in European football.

If we beat Juventus by more than one goal

If we can beat Juventus by more than one goal (say 2-0, or 3-1) then we would leapfrog them in the table as we would possess a superior goal difference in matches between the teams.

We would then need to equal or better Juventus’s result against Malmo on matchday six when we travel to Zenit. A win in Russia would guarantee first place in the group.
