Jorginho played through the pain barrier to net our dramatic injury-time winner against Leeds, his second successful spot-kick of the game, and the midfielder reflected afterwards on an action-packed afternoon at Stamford Bridge.
Jorginho kept his cool from 12 yards to score our latest winning goal in a Premier League game since September 2009, the clock timed at 93 minutes and 11 seconds as the ball hit the back of the Matthew Harding Stand net with Illan Meslier sent the wrong way.
It crowned a helter-skelter encounter between two old rivals and kept us in touch with Manchester City and Liverpool, who both also needed penalties to secure narrow victories yesterday.
‘It was very important to win after our last two games,’ said Jorginho.
‘Leeds are a tough opponent, but in the end we deserved the win. This last-minute goal is just amazing, especially in your own stadium. It feels so good.
‘It is exhausting playing Leeds. It is a really difficult game for any team, especially because they play once a week and that makes it easier for them to prepare for every game and be able to run the whole pitch man for man.
‘We can always give more,’ he added when asked about Chelsea’s performance in contrast to West Ham and Zenit.
‘If we think we gave an extra 10 per cent then we have no more to improve on, and that is not the mentality we have here. We always need to want to improve and do more, but we did our job, we needed these three points and we got them. On to the next.’
Jorginho missed the midweek trip to Russia as he continues to manage a back injury that has been causing him problems in recent weeks, earning praise from Thomas Tuchel for his efforts to play through the pain barrier.
‘My back is not in the best condition but when you need to push yourself even more to help your team it’s what you have to do,’ our vice-captain emphasised.
‘It’s hard but you have to do it. It’s the best thing you can do.’
