The FIFA FIFPro World XI is the only global award organised and decided by the players themselves, with more than 20,000 professional footballers from 69 different countries casting their vote in 2021.

The final selection of two starting XIs, one each for men and women, voted as the best players in their position will be announced during The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony on Monday 17 January 2022.

However, this year the shortlist has been reduced from the usual 55 to 23, to create a squad of the three goalkeepers, six defenders, six midfielders, six forwards and remaining two outfield players who received the largest number of votes.

In the men’s award, that gives Chelsea four representatives, with Champions League winners Edouard Mendy, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho named in the squad alongside Romelu Lukaku, who returned to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan over the summer.

Chelsea Women have gone one better, with Ann-Katrin Berger, Millie Bright, Sam Kerr, Pernille Harder and captain Magdalena Eriksson all earning inclusion following our first appearance in the Women’s Champions League final.

Kante is the only one of our men’s nominees this year who has made the World 11 previously – alongside Eden Hazard in 2018 – while Mendy and Jorginho are both on the shortlist for the first time.

The five Chelsea Women’s players nominated is the most of any club and all of them have made the shortlist before, with Bright and Harder aiming to make the World 11 for the second consecutive year.
