Between Covid postponements and the winter break in European leagues it was a reduced schedule for the Chelsea players on loan during the opening days of 2022, but there were still some important matches in the Championship and League One.

Two Chelsea loanees went head to head in the Championship as Blackpool hosted Hull City. It was Dujon Sterling and the Seasiders who emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over the Tigers in a tight game. Goalkeeper Nathan Baxter was unlucky to find imself on the losing side after being denied a clean sheet by a first-half penalty.

There was a clean sheet in the Championship for versatile defender Levi Colwill, as he helped Huddersfield Town withstand a late barrage on a heavily waterlogged pitch away at high-flying Blackburn Rovers, holding on for a 0-0 draw which keeps them in the play-off places.

Baba Rahman was denied victory with Reading by Derby County’s late fightback in their relegation battle at the Madejski Stadium, although the Royals were without the injured Danny Drinkwater in midfield.

Having been two goals ahead with four minutes remaining, two late goals meant Reading had to settle for a 2-2 draw, although the disappointment of conceding a 91st-minute equaliser was softened by extending their gap to the drop zone to three points.

Juan Castillo played the first 45 minutes as Birmingham City became the latest victims of Queens Park Rangers’ impressive away form, going down 2-1 at St Andrew’s to a side which hasn't lost on the road since October.

Gillingham and Jamie Cumming played their first match for three weeks in a League One schedule which has been heavily disrupted by Covid. The goalkeeper marked the return by keeping a clean sheet as they ended their run of six consecutive defeats with a 0-0 draw away at promotion hopefuls MK Dons. Cumming made a crucial save to keep out a long-range effort in the last minute and secure a point, but Gillingham are still four points from safety.
