Mason Mount explained how he and his Chelsea team-mates focused solely on the task at hand, as the Blues defeated Norwich to secure a big Premier League victory.
The England international shone for Thomas Tuchel’s side, registering a goal and an assist in the 3-1 victory at Carrow Road.
Mount crossed for Trevoh Chalobah to head home an early opener, before netting a sublime second around 10 minutes later. Kai Havertz added a third for the Blues in injury time.
There was plenty of focus on Chelsea leading up to the game following news that owner Roman Ambramovich had been sanctioned by the UK government but Mount insisted the players were focused on the game alone.
‘There was a lot going on and you can’t really avoid things when it’s all over the news,’ Mount explained.
‘Us players though, we just try and focus on what we have to do on the pitch and that’s our main objective.
‘You try not to look at the outside too much, we just focus on the task in hand on the pitch. We knew we had a big game in the Premier League to prepare for and when you’re in the top three, looking to put pressure on the sides above you, that’s all you think about.
‘We focused on the game in hand and putting a strong performance in and we managed to do that, which is the most important thing.’
The midfielder has a good goalscoring record against Norwich and that continued with a well-taken finish to double our lead just before the quarter-hour mark.
That was his first goal since mid-December and while Mount is delighted to get back on the scoresheet, he insists the most important thing was securing the three points.
‘The most important thing is to get the win but for me personally, it’s a great feeling to score,’ added Mason.
‘It’s been a while. I’m not sure how many games it’s been, but I’m just delighted to have got a goal and an assist in a good team win.
‘It’s an aim of mine to register more numbers and the more I get, the happier I am.
‘The last three times I’ve played here I’ve scored! I really enjoy playing here and I was pleased to score. I think I could have had more though and looking back that’s something I will analyse.
‘Scoring early I think relaxed me and I was just really pleased to help the team get a good win.
‘It was important to start brightly and that’s something we spoke about before the game. We wanted to be on the front foot straight away and press them.
‘We got the goal early and that set us up well. I thought we dominated during the first half but in the second half, we let the game slip away from us a little bit. We can’t accept that as a team and we need to be stronger and implement our game a lot more going forward.’
