Chelsea FC Women are through to the semi-finals of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup after a convincing win at Kingsmeadow this afternoon…
Goals from Magdalena Eriksson, Drew Spence, Bethany England and Niamh Charles helped secure our place in the last four of this season’s competition.
Emma Hayes made six changes to the side that started in our 3-0 triumph over Everton midweek with Ann-Katrin Berger, Bethany England, Ji So-Yun, Magdalena Eriksson, Drew Spence and Jonna Andersson coming into the starting 11 for today’s clash.
The tone for a one-sided game was set from the off as Hayes’ side dictated play from minute one at Kingsmeadow.
The first real chance of the afternoon came 10 minutes in when Millie Bright struck from distance, but her effort rolled just wide of Marie Hourihan’s goal.
Bright was certainly on the hunt for her first Blues goal of the season, following her fine goalscoring form for England. Again our no.4 found herself with space on the ball. However her effort from 30 yards out bounced off the post.
We continued to apply pressure and shortly after had another brilliant chance. Sophie Ingle threaded the ball through to England who made a darting run into the box, our No.9 squared the ball across the six-yard box but Ji's flick flew the wrong side of the post.
England found herself in among the action again when Eriksson delivered an inch-perfect ball for her to head, but it went just high of Hourihan’s goal.
The Blues relentlessly pushed for an opener in the first half, Andersson whipped in a teasing ball from the left but England was unable to hit the target.
Hourihan in the Birmingham goal fumbled a cross but the Blues were unable to capitalise on the loose ball before the away side could clear.
We finally got our goal a minute before the interval through a diving Eriksson header. Andersson, who had been whipping in dangerous crosses all half, looped in a deep free-kick towards the back post for England to head it across goal, allowing our skipper to head in her second goal of the season from close range.
We continued the second half where we left off and doubled our lead 10 minutes into the half as Spence scored her 50th Chelsea goal.
Charles laid the ball off allowing our No.24 to strike from just inside the penalty area, placing it in the bottom right-hand corner.
The floodgates seemed to open for the Blues as moments later we were 3-0 up. After a precise run into the box Ji played the ball into Spence, our No.24 then brilliantly backheeled the ball to England who made no mistake in slotting home from close range.
Right after Birmingham restarted, we got our fourth of the afternoon through Charles. Fleming’s corner in wasn’t dealt with by the visitors and Charles was there to loop her header into the top corner.
The visitors just couldn’t deal with the pace at which the Blues went forward with. England got her second and our fifth of the afternoon with 18 minutes left on the clock.
Substitute Alsu Abdullina flicked the ball on for England to take a touch and place a powerful left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
Our No.9 was whiskers away from scoring an FA Cup hat-trick. England was through on goal and aimed to dink the ball past Hourihan but it ran just wide of the goal.
The hat-trick just wasn’t to be for England who hit the bar with just a few minutes remaining, following a perfect delivery from Andersson.
The draw for the semi-final takes place tomorrow evening live on BBC’s Sports Day programme from 6.30pm.
Arsenal, Manchester City and West Ham have all qualified for the final four of the competition, with the semi-finals set to take place on the weekend of 16/17 April.
The Blues are back to Barclays FA Women’s Super League action on Wednesday evening when we host Tottenham Hotspur at Kingsmeadow. A win for Hayes’ side against Spurs would see us climb to top of the table.
Wednesday’s game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
