Chalobah spent last season on loan at French club Lorient and was perhaps expecting to be finding another loan club ahead of this season, before Thomas Tuchel decided to include him in pre-season.

It’s a decision that would now appear a well justified one, given his inclusion in many major games and his performance in the Chelsea defence.

‘Coming back knowing I had done well, all I wanted to do was keep myself fit,’ Trevoh reveals. ‘I didn’t know what I was doing when I came back, I didn’t know if I would go back out on loan.

‘From there I got a bit of confidence, and I started to try even harder. Then the Super Cup comes, and I’m just like “Wow”. Even then, I was taking every training and every game as it comes.

‘The manager spoke to me after the Crystal Palace game and said it would be better for me to stay here rather than go out on loan, to learn from Thiago Silva, Rudiger and all the other players around me.’

Chalobah admits that seeing friends and Academy team-mates like Reece James and Mason Mount stake their claim in the first-team squad, only made him work harder on his return to Cobham.

‘That was my motivation,' added Chalobah. 'I watched all the Chelsea games when Mason and Reece were playing under [Frank] Lampard. I would rush home to watch the games. Seeing them play for Chelsea is massive.

‘I played with them throughout all age groups and then I was seeing them play on television,’ Chalobah adds.

‘Training with those two [Mason and Reece] just bought back the days when I was training with them back in Academy days so yes, it made me feel confident and relaxed.’

Trev admits he is loving every minute working under boss Thomas Tuchel...

‘He gives opportunities, there has been a lot of young players that have trained, like Lewis Hall for example. There are opportunities there, that’s so good from the manager to give young players the chance.

‘As a young player, you need that trust and belief in the manager and that’s what helps. He gives you extra confidence.

‘For me I could be a role model for a lot of the young players growing up. I went on loan, you could easily give up and think “I’m never going to get to where I want to be”. I want to be an example for the younger boys. You need to do those loans and gain experience. I don’t regret any of my loans, they have helped me where I am today.

Trevoh also provided an insight into what it’s like on the training field under Tuchel’s instructions.

‘It is the competitiveness from everyone really,' explained the defender.

'As defenders, we don’t want to concede goals. You see how much it means to us having clean sheets and winning games. Teams are not breaking us down. The manager has come in and it was one of the first things he said. He has that mentality of always wanting to win and never conceding.’
