Chelsea FC Women defender Millie Bright says the team’s mentality will have a big part to play in today’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup semi-final clash against Arsenal.
The Blues returned from international action earlier this week and head straight into this mouth-watering tie with the Gunners, in a repeat of last year’s final.
Millie Bright described the feeling of being ‘excited’ as Emma Hayes’ side prepare to face Arsenal at Meadow Park this afternoon.
‘After a successful international camp, I’m just looking to bring that momentum back and keep performing. I’m super excited, I think everyone that you speak to in football would love to play in the FA Cup, so to have another opportunity to make the final is unbelievable and something that we always set out to do.
‘We know how special the FA Cup is and we’ve got a tough game coming up on Sunday.’
While the footballing world has been hyping up today’s semi-final, Bright says her and the team have been maintaining the same mentality and have prepared for the game in the same way they would any other fixture.
‘We try to keep our mentality the same throughout the season, no matter the opponent or the game in which we’re playing; whether it’s for cup or league. The season has been extremely tight, so for us every game has been a cup final.
‘We know that we have to come back, switch straight back on and get back in Chelsea mode and make sure we’re right come the weekend, because it is a massive game and a big opponent. That’s something that we’ve done extremely well throughout the season, treat every game the same.’
On the prospect of facing Jonas Eidevall’s side again this season, our No.4 added: ‘It’s a great game every time we play Arsenal, they’re a top team and I hope the fans are just excited as we are because it is always an interesting game. Come Sunday, we’ll be ready.’
The Blues will be looking to make it back-to-back FA Cup final wins this year, beating Arsenal today would put Hayes’ side one step closer and book a date at Wembley for Sunday 15 May in a bid to defend the trophy.
‘It’s every player’s dream, Wembley is the heart of football and to be able to potentially play there again is massive and is something that as a team we strive for. You hear Emma [Hayes] say it all the time, the club’s about trophies and winning. But we’ve got to make sure we’re on top of our game come Sunday because it’s definitely not going to be easy.’
The tie with Arsenal is all the more looked upon because of the current league standings. Chelsea sit at the summit of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and are one point above Arsenal on equal games played, with just four league fixtures remaining this season.
‘Everyone knows the pressure that’s on this game, but then again we’ve been in that position with every league game, so we’ve built a great mentality in the group and honestly, it’s just about doing everything the same and not hyping it up. You never play the occasion, you play the game.’
Bright also discussed the importance of Chelsea supporters and just how much of an impact they will make this afternoon.
‘They’ll be massive, they’ve been extremely important throughout the season. They’re a massive part of our game, we hear them every single game no matter how many of them are there, we always hear them cheering for us and we know that they’ll have our backs no matter what.’
