Ross Barkley’s late winner in the 2-1 victory over Watford in Chelsea’s season finale on Sunday ensured Thomas Tuchel’s side set a new club record as he became the 21st player to score for the Blues in a competitive match in the 2021/22 season.
Along with Malang Sarr and Kenedy, Barkley was one of only three outfield players in our matchday squad against the Hornets who had not scored for the club in the campaign.
However, after coming on to replace Antonio Rudiger midway through the second half, the midfielder picked the perfect time to net his first goal of the season as he headed in Reece James’ cross in stoppage time to secure the three points.
Coming three seconds into additional time, Barkley’s strike was the fifth time that Chelsea had scored a winning goal after the 88-minute mark in the Premier League in 21/22 after Jorginho’s penalty against Leeds in December, Hakim Ziyech’s volley at Crystal Palace in February, Kai Havertz’s stunner against Newcastle in March and Christian Pulisic’s fine finish against West Ham last month.
The previous club record of 20 different scorers in a season was set in 2015/16 and matched last month when Ruben Loftus-Cheek bagged his first Chelsea goal in nearly three years to break the deadlock in our FA Cup semi-final victory over Crystal Palace.
Romelu Lukaku finished the season as our leading scorer with 15 goals while Kai Haverz finished one behind with 14 after opening the scoring against Watford.
Chelsea’s Player of the Season Mason Mount scored 13 goals to go along with his 16 assists while Timo Werner was the only Blue to score in all four main competitions in which we competed as he finished the campaign with 11 goals.
Lukaku, Trevoh Chalobah, Saul and Andreas Christensen all netted their first Chelsea goals during the course of the season.
