A season of crucial goals

Havertz netted the 2000th goal of the Roman Abramovich era when he headed in Reece James’s cross in the 1-1 draw against Burnley at Stamford Bridge.

The German did have a quiet spell throughout the winter months, scoring just twice between the months of November and January, though his next goal for the Blues was a record-breaking one.

With his cool penalty in the FIFA Club World Cup final, Havertz became the first player to score the match-winning goal in the both the UEFA Champions League final and then the subsequent Club World Cup final since Lionel Messi did so for Barcelona in 2011.

In mid-March, Havertz scored a late winner against Newcastle at the Bridge, a strike which ensured he had netted in three consecutive Premier League appearances for the first time in his career, while in all competitions he had a hand in six goals in five games (five goals, one assist), stretching from late February until this contest against the Magpies on 13 March.

Kai also scored the 100th Premier League goal of Thomas Tuchel's tenure, when he slotted in Kenedy’s cross against Watford on the final day of the season.

The turning point

Kai’s match-winner in Abu Dhabi to claim our first ever Club World Cup can be viewed as influential in turning his fortunes around in the 21/22 campaign.

After we returned from the Middle East, Havertz started 12 of 14 games up until our home match with Arsenal in mid-April. He began our next six consecutive Premier League matches, with five goals coming in this spell.

He featured twice at Wembley in this run, in the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semi-final, while appearing in all four of our Champions League knockout matches, with his compatriot Thomas Tuchel constantly trusting him to lead the line.

Building on his debut season

After his strong start to life in west London in the 2020/21 season, Havertz has shown signs of yet more progression in his second season with the Blues. He upped his goal tally from nine in 45 appearances last term to a double figure tally of 14 in 47 this time out.

With 20 goal involvements across the season, the German can be proud of his return on his first season in front of crowds in English football, with just Mason Mount bettering his goal involvements (38).
