Sjoeke Nusken's Germany will contest the bronze-medal match following their 1-0 defeat to Emma Hayes' United States in the semi-finals.

An extra-time winner from Sophia Smith quashed Germany's chance of reaching the final to go for gold - but despite the defeat in the last-four, Nusken still has a chance of a medal as her country will contest the bronze-medal match against the loser of Spain v Brazil on Friday afternoon.

In the semi-final, Nusken continued her run of starting in each of Germany's matches at the Olympics as she was named in the XI against the United States in Lyon.

With the game goalless nearing the 30-minute mark, our midfielder registered a half-chance for Germany but her glancing effort inside the box did not trouble the opposition - who had created several opportunities of their own - as it trailed off target.

There were chances for both sides throughout the second half and the US thought they had broke the deadlock with four minutes to go, but Mallory Swanson's effort was ruled out for offside.

The last-four clash would then go to extra-time - like both nations' respective quarter-final ties - with neither side able to find the breakthrough in the 90 minutes.

Five minutes into extra-time the USA took the lead through Smith, who slotted the ball into the back of the net, which proved to be the match-winner as Hayes' side progressed to the gold-medal match which will be played in Paris.
