Josh Acheampong and Tyrique George share their journey through the Chelsea ranks together in a joint interview in tonight’s matchday programme.
The pair have known each other since they were nine years old and were both given a locker in the first-team dressing room this season after impressing when given the opportunity to shine by Enzo Maresca.
'I didn’t really expect it,' explains Acheampong. 'I hadn’t actually been in the dressing room at all so to be in there at all was good… and then to be inducted with Tyrique was really good.
'Tyrique has played a big part in my journey because we have come through all the age groups together and also through going away with England as well. We have always been around each other.'
'Growing up we would be going to training, going to the gym, playing in Powerleague together,' adds George. 'Back in the day, getting that work in so we could be sitting here today.
'Josh is a very funny guy and a top player. He has always been a good friend, ever since we were young. He is a good person to speak to away from football as well. We probably speak every day.'
You can also hear from Gary Cahill as he looks ahead to next month’s Chelsea Legends game against Liverpool Legends at Anfield. The former Blues skipper has kept himself in shape and admits he misses the big occasions since hanging up his boots.
'In terms of missing football, I’m generally okay but when I’m at a stadium watching a live game, that’s when I miss football, because I can feel the atmosphere that the players will be experiencing,' he says.
'So this game is a great occasion to get involved in and I’m hoping to replicate the buzz a little bit of playing in front of a crowd. Obviously, it’s not as serious and competitive as it used to be when I was a professional but it’s still a great experience. It’ll be nice to be back in that environment for a one-off!
'I still feel quite fit when I play now, but the next day it’s a different story. I know the next morning if I’ve played a game. While I’m playing, I still feel, in my head at least, that I can still play, I can still do it, but the next morning I realise I probably couldn’t. But it’s good fun.'
