Thiago has long blazed a trail during his illustrious career. And with his goal against Manchester City on Sunday, his first since January 2022, the Brazilian further etched his name in Chelsea folklore.

At 39 years and 51 days old, Thiago surpassed Dick Spence as our oldest scorer. Spence was 38 years and 282 days old when he scored away to Wolves back on 26 April 1947.

Thiago was already our oldest scorer in Premier League history, taking that record off Didier Drogba when he scored against West Ham in December 2021.

Here are our top 10 league goalscorers since 1992…

10 – Steve Clarke – 34 years 239 days

Club legend Steve Clarke didn’t get many but his last Chelsea goal – and his first in six years – was surely one of his best: a fine left-footed volley during a 4-1 thrashing of Liverpool in April 1998.

9 – Marcel Desailly – 34 years 246 days

The Rock chose a great moment to score his final goal for us, a header to equalise against Liverpool in May 2003 in a game we had to avoid losing to secure Champions League football and with it the club’s future.

8 – Gianluca Vialli – 34 years 311 days

The first of two player-managers on this list, Luca scored in his last game before hanging up his boots. It was a trademark control and volley against Derby County in May 1999.

7 – Frank Lampard – 35 years 289 days

Super Frank’s 211th and final Chelsea goal was a rebound from a penalty saved by future Blue Asmir Begovic as we comfortably defeated Stoke City at Stamford Bridge in April 2014.

6 – Glenn Hoddle – 36 years 150 days

Glenn Hoddle’s solitary Chelsea goal was a neat touch and finish to put the seal on a 2-0 home win against West Ham United in March 1994.

5 – John Terry – 36 years 159 days

JT’s penultimate game for us yielded his final goal. The opponents at the Bridge were Watford; the date May 2017; the goal a well-taken one from inside the six-yard box during a 4-3 victory.

4 – Mal Donaghy – 36 years 167 days

In a topsy-turvy London derby against Tottenham in February 1994, Mal Donaghy fired in at the near post to reduce the arrears to 2-1 in a classic we would eventually go on to win 4-3.

3 – Gianfranco Zola – 36 years 290 days

Gianfranco Zola brought the goalscoring curtain down in Chelsea blue in typically spectacular fashion, cleverly lobbing Everton goalkeeper Richard Wright from close to the touchline.

2 – Didier Drogba – 37 years 49 days

Didier Drogba’s 164th and final goal for us was a smart finish away to Leicester City in April 2015 as we closed in on the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho.

1 – Thiago Silva – 39 years 51 days

Thiago’s perfectly directed header past his compatriot Ederson ended a wait of nearly two years for a goal.

When Thiago next features, he will become our oldest-ever outfield player, again beating Dick Spence (39 years 57 days) to the record.
