Defender Ashley Lawrence believes the Blues showed good character to come from behind and beat Celtic 2-1 in Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League match in Glasgow.

Sonia Bompastor’s side fell behind midway through the first half in the Group B encounter, but the Blues responded rapidly and were 2-1 up by the 32nd minute thanks to two quickfire goals from Maika Hamano and Lawrence.

The win against the reigning Scottish champions ensures we sit atop Group B with three wins from three. And Lawrence was delighted to come away with the victory after a competitive contest.

‘It was a tough game,’ Lawrence said. ‘We knew coming here that it was not going to be easy. No game in the group stages of the Champions League is easy.

‘We came here and wanted to get three points. We conceded early and knew that was one of their strengths on the counterattack. They were quick.

‘So of course, we’re frustrated to concede that goal, but I think we came back in that first half and we were composed on the ball, we created some chances and came back to score two goals.

‘In the second half, it was just about weathering the storm and seeing out the game. Of course, you want to score another one, but we fought throughout the game, came away with three points and that was the goal.’

The Blues were in uncharted waters after going behind, with this being the first occasion Bompastor’s side have conceded first since the arrival of our head coach this summer.

But to react the way we did, with our equaliser arriving six minutes after Celtic’s opener and Lawrence’s winner just four minutes after that, our defender believes is a reflection of good character.

‘We talk a lot about mentality,’ Lawrence added. ‘We always want to keep a clean sheet. Once we conceded, we knew we had to come together and be composed.

‘That’s what we showed. We took our chances when we could and scored quickly after conceding. We just wanted to build from there. It shows a lot of character from this team against a good Celtic side.’
