From making his senior Chelsea debut and applying the lessons learned to the support of his family and progression through the age groups, it's been a whirlwind season for our Under-21s forward Ato Ampah.
After joining the Blues as an Under-11, Ampah dreamed of one day making his senior debut for Chelsea. That dream became a reality on Thursday 12 December when he played 45 minutes against Astana in our UEFA Conference League fixture. He helped us secure a 3-1 victory.
As Ampah rose through the ranks at Cobham, he watched Academy graduates step into the senior environment to train alongside first-team players and work under head coaches such as Enzo Maresca.
While continuing to make his mark in our Under-21s fixtures, Ampah trained with the senior squad before the Academy’s festive break. It resulted in a call-up for the trip to Kazakhstan and an introduction at half time against Astana in place of Pedro Neto. It was a moment the 18-year-old had worked toward since signing for the Blues.
'It was everything I’ve dreamed of,' Ampah says with a smile. 'The feeling was unbelievable and it was a great opportunity. I hope I can continue developing and more chances like that come my way in the future.
'All of the boys were really supportive and offered advice throughout my time. That helped a lot. Tosin [Adarabioyo], in particular, was extremely helpful and I really appreciated it.
'The response was incredible. At the time, my older brothers were in Ghana and everyone else was watching from home. My family was so happy for me because they knew how hard I had worked and how much I wanted that moment. They’ve always been there for me, supporting and believing in me.
'Everything I do in football is for my family and that’s what keeps me pushing forward. My younger brother plays for the Under-15s and I’m always giving him advice – and he does the same for me. Seeing my debut gave him a glimpse of what could happen if we continue to work hard.
'I can’t stress enough how important family is to me and how each one has shaped me into the person I am today. Overall, it was a special moment for them – and of course, for me.'
Ampah has continued to catch the eye at Under-21 level and produced a fine solo goal as we progressed into the Premier League Cup knockout stages with a 2-1 victory over Derby County last time out. He also found the back of the net against Brentford in the previous game against Brentford in the same competition.
He now has four goals since the start of the season – two in Premier League 2 action and two in the Premier League Cup – and has registered two assists across both competitions.
'I think I’ve been playing well,' Ampah says. 'The main thing is consistency and I’m still working on that. Against Brentford and Derby, I scored, so it was good to get on the scoresheet in back-to-back games.
'I always say, ‘You’re only as good as your last game,’ so I want to keep pushing and making a difference on the pitch. I’d say I’m my own biggest critic, always striving to progress and add more to my performance.
'Recently, I’ve been in a good headspace, which makes a huge difference. I have a strong winning mentality and that’s a big part of being a Chelsea player. But yeah, I’m feeling good!'
This season is the first that Ampah has been fully part of our Under-21s squad. 'The support around me has been amazing, not just now, but since I joined,' he says.
'Everyone wants me to push on and be the best version of myself. Filipe (Coelho) and the coaching staff have been incredibly helpful and are so detailed in everything. I’m putting in the work, just like everyone else, to make sure I’m giving my all and becoming the best I can be.
‘Having strong connections off the pitch makes everything so much easier. We all want to win for each other, not just for ourselves.
'Since joining at a young age, I’ve built strong bonds with all the boys across the squad and that’s what makes the academy special. It really makes a difference because we all want it. We love celebrating together. When we’re united, it makes us stronger.'
Ampah and his team-mates will now focus on Friday's upcoming clash against Leeds United. The Premier League 2 clash will take place on our home turf and kick off at 7pm. Supporters can watch the game for free on the official Chelsea app and website.
Our last league outing was a disappointing one, as we were beaten 2-0 by Southampton. It is a result we’re eager to bounce back from.
'I’m excited for Leeds,' says Ampah, 'just as I am for every game. Each match is an opportunity to show why you play for Chelsea and what you can do, both on and off the ball. Leeds will be a tough challenge, which makes it all the more exciting. Hopefully, we can get on a winning streak.
'Playing in front of home fans is amazing! The supporters are always there, pushing us to keep going. They almost feel like our 12th player, and it makes such a difference hearing their support.
'I thank God for the opportunity to play for Chelsea. I pray that I stay healthy, keep progressing and continue giving my all. I want to give everything to the badge, whether it’s in training or in games - Leeds will be another great opportunity.’
