Benoit Badiashile is under no illusion: Chelsea are favourites to win the UEFA Conference League. And as the defender prepares for our quarter-final tie against Legia Warsaw, he has been discussing the squad’s determination to live up to those expectations and his personal motivations for doing so.

Badiashile has been a regular in the Conference League for the Blues, starting eight of our ten games in the competition to date, including both legs of the last-16 success against Copenhagen.

It has been a successful European campaign to this point, and the French defender acknowledges a club with as storied a European history as ours should be serious contenders. However, he also appreciates that there is work to be done.

‘Chelsea is one of the best clubs in the world, so people expect you to win it, and we’re comfortable with that,’ Badiashile stated.

‘We’ve been aware of that since the start of the tournament, and we’re ready to meet those expectations.

‘It’s been going really well. We’ve won every game. The start of the competition has been flawless so far – despite the fact that we could have played some games slightly better. But ultimately, the win is what counts.

‘We are really pleased with our performance so far, but it’s not over yet. We still have a lot of games to go before we can win the trophy. We’re going to give everything we’ve got to win it because it’s an important objective for us.’

Badiashile has experience of playing in both the Champions League and Europa League with his previous club Monaco, and he is determined to help Chelsea return to Europe’s top table next season. It is where the Blues belong, he says.

The 24-year-old has achieved plenty in his career already, but there is one thing missing from his CV: silverware.

‘I’ve never been lucky enough to win a trophy, but I have played in a final, which I lost unfortunately.’ Badiashile is referring to the 2021 Coupe de France showpiece, which Monaco lost 2-0 to PSG.

‘I know what it’s like to lose when you’re so close to winning the trophy so, of course, it’s an extra motivating factor.

‘I’m going to give my all with the team to win this trophy, because we have what it takes.’

Chelsea will be hoping to show why we are favourites once more in the Polish capital on Thursday.
