Aggie Beever-Jones was delighted to help Chelsea regain top spot in the Women's Super League with a vital win over West Ham United.

Beever-Jones' second-minute strike and a late goal from Erin Cuthbert sealed our sixth straight win in all competitions – and ensured we moved back ahead of Manchester City in the WSL title race.

The Hammers didn't play like a side battling at the foot of the table, however. A tight contest was only put to bed when Cuthbert thumped home a volley in the closing stages.

With the trip to east London our sixth match in March, Beever-Jones felt it was understandable the Blues weren't firing on all cylinders. But she praised her Chelsea teammates for finding a way to secure victory once more.

'We got an early goal but it was a tough game, we can’t deny that,' she said. 'West Ham prepared for us thoroughly and we’ve had such an intense schedule this month that it was always going tough.

'But we got the job done and we got the two goals. We all know we weren’t up to scratch today, we know that within ourselves.

'There were times we could and should have done better, but within this tight schedule we have, that is just the way it is. Sometimes that’s what football is like. When you play teams like this with a low block it can be hard to break them down.

'But it was a great finish from Erin to get the second goal. We got through it today and the result is the most important thing.'

Beever-Jones' opener arrived after just 70 seconds of play – and it capped off a flowing team move that had begun inside our penalty area.

Hannah Hampton, Niamh Charles, and Sjoeke Nusken were all involved before Lauren James picked out the goalscorer with a shrewd pass.

‘Whenever I score,' added Beever-Jones, 'I can never really remember what happened. I just remember screaming at LJ [Lauren James] to play me in and just saw that it was open to be hit first time.

‘We’ve been working a lot all week on playing out and with Hannah’s [Hampton] distribution, she is such a great asset for us.

‘We’ve been able to work on it all week so it was really nice to deliver that on the pitch.’

Back at the top of the WSL on goal difference, the Blues can now focus on Wednesday night's UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Ajax at Stamford Bridge.

We lead 3-0 after the first leg in Amsterdam but Beever-Jones insists there will be no danger of complacency with a spot in the last four on the line.

‘Champions League nights under the lights, what more could you want? We’re in a good position at 3-0 already. But it is not over. They are coming to the Bridge fighting, but so are we. It’s going to be a good game.’
