Aggie Beever-Jones described her side's refusal to give up in our 2-1 victory over Man City as 'the Chelsea way' and insists the Blues will be playing with 'our hearts on our sleeves' in Thursday's Champions League quarter-final.
Beever-Jones scored the goal that began the Chelsea second-half fightback on Sunday after we found ourselves 1-0 down against Manchester City at half-time in the Women's Super League.
Her perfectly-executed finish came just five minutes after the break, and she explained why it was a vastly different performance from the Blues after the interval.
'If I’m honest, the first half wasn’t up to our standard and we were frustrated at half-time,' she admitted.
'We came out second half ready to prove a point and I think we did that with the early goal and I think that was credit to the team.
'I think Erin coming on the pitch and being able to do that is such an Erin Cuthbert thing to do!
'We’re really happy, but for us it’s only half-time, we’ve got the game on Thursday which we really need to prep for and I’m super excited for it.'
After suffering the first defeat of the season in the Champions League quarter-final first leg last Wednesday, we found ourselves 1-0 down to Man City again on Sunday, and there were some home truths delivered in the dressing room during the break.
The forward said: 'There’s always stern words when we lose at Chelsea. We’re a club who want to win and that’s part of who we are and we win trophies and we know that.
'I think today at half-time, stern words were said that needed to be said and I think it was clear from the performance in the second-half, how we came out and did what we needed to do and executed the game plan.'
While Beever-Jones bagged the goal that levelled the scoring after half-time, she revealed that there is a collective responsibility to speak up in the dressing room.
'I think it’s everyone,' she continued. 'I think sometimes with us we know that it’s not up to standard, sometimes you don’t need to say it but I think we can reflect on that first half and know that it wasn’t good enough, individually.
'But I think collectively we have some great characters who have been captains. Obviously we’ve got Millie [Bright], we’ve got Bronzey [Lucy Bronze], who are world-class players, and I think it’s just making sure everyone’s on the same page.
'I think in the first half, arguably the press wasn’t the best and I think we figured that out in the second half and it showed, and I’m just really happy with the win today.
'We didn’t give up, and that’s the Chelsea way.'
Chelsea face Man City in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, and Beever-Jones revealed how the side plan to attack the 2-0 deficit from the first leg.
'After that second half performance, that’s the thing we said at half-time... belief,' she said.
'I think you saw that today and I know for us that’s put us in a good position, but they’re going to come ready to put up a fight and so are we.
'I know, being at Chelsea, and the values of the club, we are going to be so ready for it, ready to play for the shirt and with our hearts on our sleeves.'
