Confidence was a word on the lips of Chelsea players after our impressive away win against Leicester City maintained our place at the head of the Premier League table.
Toni Rudiger and Christian Pulisic were both on target in our first league win at the King Power Stadium for four years, their goals sandwiching one by N’Golo Kante in the 3-0 win.
Pulisic’s strike was his first for his club since his return from an ankle injury and came shortly after he had been introduced as a substitute. The pass for the goal came from Hakim Ziyech, another sub, emphasising the strength in depth in the squad.‘It is a massive strength, we've seen that the whole season,’ agreed Pulisic after the game.
‘One guy is out, the next guy steps up and we've continued to do that. We're looking really strong at the moment.‘The busy period that comes up now, through the winter, we're going to need everyone.‘For me it's just good to be back playing with the team after quite a long time out. I'm happy I could come in and make an impact in this game and I'm ready to start my season. I’m gaining confidence and feeling much better now.’
Rudiger revealed his headed goal was the result of analysis of Leicester’s weak points and training ground planning, and he added:‘I felt very confident going into this game and I promised my son that I will score. I helped the team have a good very good performance and it could have been even more.
‘I like to get myself on the scoresheet but I take as well the clean sheet, because this is what makes me much happier. Overall we had the very good performance, we came straight out of the block strong and with good mentality.’
Attention quickly switches from the Premier League to the Champions League and our hosting of Juventus on Tuesday, the team currently three points ahead of us in our group-stage table.‘We have some confidence going into that,’ said Pulisic. ‘We had a tough match against them last time so we want to go and have a good result at home.’
