'I get by with a little help from my friends' certainly rung true for Nathalie Bjorn following her move from Merseyside to Chelsea.

The centre-back became our latest Swedish recruit, joining goalkeeper Zecira Musovic and winger Johanna Rytting Kaneryd when she signed from fellow Women’s Super League side Everton in January.

The trio, who play together for their country, reunited at club-level having previously been teammates at Rosengard in their native Sweden. And being back together – this time as Blues – helped Bjorn quickly adapt to her new London surroundings.

‘I have a lot to thank my Swedish friends for,’ Bjorn explained in an exclusive interview reflecting on her first six months at Chelsea. ‘Both Z and JoJo took care of me as they have been at the club for a long time; they know how everything works and what life is like here.

‘I played with them before in Sweden and we play together on the national team, so naturally we are drawn to each other because we know each other so well. They know everything about this club, so using that helped me focus on my football.’

Bjorn also credits the coaches and staff who enabled her to find her feet during a transitional period where she swapped the blue of Everton for the blue of Chelsea.

‘The staff also helped me with all the things around football,’ she added. ‘When you get help for things off and around the pitch, it makes it easier and faster to adapt to playing on the pitch.’

Having a strong support system was especially important to Bjorn, who joined mid-campaign and was thrust straight into action. The defender made her debut four days after signing, coming on as a substitute against West Ham in the FA Cup, and soon cemented her place as a regular in the team.

To make an instant impression so soon after becoming a Blue is something Bjorn looks back on with pride.

‘It went fast for me to adapt to the way that Chelsea plays and to play with new players,’ said Bjorn. ‘It was a different style of play than what I was used to at Everton.

‘It is something I learned about myself and I am proud I came into the team quite quickly and got playing time from the very beginning. I adapted really quick.’

After such a positive start to life at the club, Bjorn then had to practice patience after an injury sidelined the defender for almost two months. She returned to the starting XI for our final three WSL games and helped us retain our league title.

To win silverware in her first campaign was the cherry on the cake for Bjorn, who had previously spoken about her desire to win trophies with the club. But with winning comes great expectations and our defender has already embraced everything that comes with playing for Chelsea.

‘The pressure of winning,’ said Bjorn. ‘That is number one of what it means to be Chelsea, of course, which I love.

‘I missed that feeling to play for silverware and to play in Europe against the best teams in the world. It [joining the club] was the right step for me take.’

After a whirlwind six months that saw Bjorn establish herself as a key component of the Chelsea defence, she is already looking forward to her first full campaign as Blue.

‘It will be good for me and my body to get a full season and just to be here from the start with the team,’ added Bjorn. ‘We will have a new coach and a full pre-season together. I think it will benefit me very much.’
