A New Year brings a new face to the Chelsea squad in the shape of Sweden defender Nathalie Bjorn – and she has spoken of her excitement and ambition to succeed after joining the Blues from fellow Women’s Super League side Everton.
With more than 300 senior games to her name, the 26-year-old arrives with a wealth of experience at club and international level. And she arrives from Merseyside after establishing herself as a key figure in the Everton side.
A versatile player, the Swedish international has played in central defence and central midfield for both club and country. A commanding and athletic defender with excellent passing ability, Bjorn will add undoubted quality to our double-winning squad.
In possession of a desire to help the team and an unwavering appetite for success, our newest recruit speaks exclusively about her style of play, some familiar faces among the group and her excitement at the prospect of pulling on the Chelsea shirt.
When Bjorn makes her first appearance in Chelsea blue, supporters can expect to see a player who is willing to give everything for the badge. In her own words, she tells us about her playing style and wanting to bring her qualities to the team.
‘You will see that I will fight 100%, I want to win every duel and every game,' she says. 'You will see some of my qualities with my passing and passing through lines is my biggest quality, I would say.
'I hope that I can help the team with my style of play.’
Having traded her native Sweden for the Women’s Super League and Everton in the summer of 2021, Bjorn praised the quality of players who are competing in the division and alluded to its ever-increasing competitive nature.
‘This league is really good. I would say it’s the best league we have in the world right now. Every team can beat every team.
‘There are a lot of world-class players, so adapting from the Swedish league to English was hard in the beginning because you are playing against world-class players all the time. It’s a very fun and competitive league.'
Our Swedish duo will become a trio when Bjorn is reunited with compatriots Zecira Musovic and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd after their success at the World Cup last summer. That will provide a sense of familiarity our new arrival believes will be helpful while she settles in.
‘It’s really nice to have the Swedes here who I have known for a long time and played with them before. It’s a nice feeling to have them here.
‘Of course, I’m looking forward to meeting the staff and the rest of the players.’
Manchester United and Real Madrid are the visitors to Stamford Bridge in the WSL and UEFA Women’s Champions League this month. Bjorn exuded excitement at the prospect of stepping out in front of our fans at the Bridge and is focused on contributing to further success with the team.
‘It’s an amazing stadium, it’s a really nice stadium. It’s an amazing pitch and I cannot wait to get started and play in these big games.
‘I want to help the team as much as possible and I want to win as much as possible. I’m ready to get this journey started!’
