How can you be black and a Chelsea fan? That is the question emerging director Xaymaca Awoyungbo explores in his powerful documentary film 'Blue is the Colour', which was created as part of the Blue Creator Fund.
The fund was launched in May in collaboration with VERSUS; the ambition was to give 18 to 30-year-olds from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to produce a creative project about Chelsea and its community.
There would be two winners, with each aspiring creative receiving up to £15k in funding to bring their concept to life.
After receiving more than 1,000 applications, the fund was awarded to Becky Gordon, an aspiring jewellery designer who created a capsule collection of Chelsea signet rings to champion 100 unsung heroes of Chelsea's community, and Xaymaca, who produced his documentary.
His film delves into Chelsea's complicated and regretful history with race. From the use in 1969 of reggae instrumental song Liquidator – which remains a matchday staple – to the abhorrent racial abuse suffered by Paul Cannoville in the 1980s, to the influence of Ruud Guillt in the 1990s and, in the decade that followed, the impact of several African players who helped bring trophy after trophy to Stamford Bridge.
On Friday, Xaymaca showcased his project alongside Becky's at the Saatchi Gallery to a room of creators from Chelsea FC, football, and the wider creative community.
During the event, hosted by Mayowa Quadri, a Blue Creator Fund ambassador and head of brand at VERSUS, both winners explained what the Blue Creator Fund means to them.
'The Blue Creator Fund gives fans a voice to tell their stories,' explained Xaymaca at the event.
'With the support of Chelsea and the ambassadors, I've experienced the full production process and used the opportunity to tell a story that challenges Chelsea, football and Britain as a whole.’
Becky echoed that praise: ‘The Blue Creator Fund is such a unique programme because it acknowledges the potential for culture change in football whilst also giving an opportunity to nurture a new generation of creatives with a passion for the game.’
