Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge on Sunday for what should be another thrilling Women's Super League contest against Arsenal. And ahead of the London derby, we spoke to Elizabeth Payne about her experience supporting the Blues in SW6...
I had always been around Chelsea growing up. My brother supported them as a kid and so did one of my friends.
It was only natural I became a Blue when I found my love for the game. Football had never been my thing, but it was the 2016 men’s Euros that ignited a fire in me.
I’m half-Welsh, so that was a summer to remember. Watching us reach the semi-finals... Wow! I started watching more and more football after that.
It was the women’s Euros in 2022 that was the real catalyst though. What was something of a casual hobby became a passion. One that everyone who knows me is well aware of now!
My first Chelsea game was watching the women at Stamford Bridge against Tottenham in November of that year. It was an unforgettable experience.
I love going to Stamford Bridge. It takes the game to the next level. The atmosphere, well, it’s hard to put into words. I like to think I contribute to that… I’m known for getting a bit shouty!
When I went to watch the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, the fans were so loud. It was the same when we played Manchester City at the Bridge earlier this season. It felt like a title decider, but we were only seven games into the season.
Anyone thinking about coming to the Arsenal game, this would be my pitch to you… Get your tickets! Women’s football is a community for everyone. It doesn’t matter who you are, you’re welcome here.
You will get to witness one of the biggest rivalries in the women’s game. They have battled for league titles and cups. Surely you will want to be there when London is blue?
Supporting Chelsea has given me so much. I’ve found my passion now. So much so, that I’m currently studying to work in the football media industry.
I’ve had the chance to meet my heroes. A couple of years ago when I was out in London, I heard a Welsh voice and straightaway I knew it was Sophie Ingle. Chatting with her was a standout moment for me.
I’ve met Guro Reiten and Millie Bright too which was so cool.
I can’t wait to cheer the team on on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. I’ll be loud and proud like I always am. Up the Chels!
