The countdown to our opening game of the WSL season is almost over and with Chelsea beginning the defence of our title against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, we profile Swedish shot stopper Zecira Musovic who enjoyed a hugely successful World Cup campaign during the summer.

Player Profile

Name: Zecira Musovic

National Team: Sweden

Place of Birth: Falun, Sweden

Position: Goalkeeper

DOB: 26 May, 1996 (age 27)

Height: 1.80m (5 ft 11 in)

Chelsea career

Musovic made the switch from Rosengard in her native Sweden to Chelsea in January 2021 and took the number one jersey that had previously been worn by her compatriot and former Blues goalkeeper, Hedvig Lindahl.

Having first come to our attention after impressing in a friendly between Chelsea and Rosengard in 2017, she made her debut in a 2-0 away win over West Ham United. She also kept a clean sheet in her only other appearance in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.

There were more minutes for Musovic the following year where she appeared in half of our Champions League group fixtures, as well as playing regularly in cup competitions and just shy of half of our WSL fixtures. She registered an assist for Sam Kerr’s late winner over Aston Villa in March of that season.

In her third season with the Blues, the Swede achieved seven clean sheets in 14 appearances. She celebrated putting pen to paper on a contract extension in February, finishing the season with a domestic Double in the shape of the WSL and FA Cup.

International career

Sweden triumphed at the 2015 UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship in Israel, a tournament in which Musovic captained her country. She was awarded her first senior cap in March 2018 against Russia at the Algarve Cup.

Further call-ups were on the horizon for Musovic who represented her country at the 2019 Women’s World Cup and the 2021 Olympics, winning bronze and silver medals respectively. She was part of the Sweden squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2022 European Championships.

She was an integral part of the Sweden team which finished third at the World Cup this summer, where she produced a string of excellent performances and her exploits have seen her nominated for the Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award.
