Sonia Bompastor has confirmed Lauren James is available to face Arsenal on Sunday, in a match that will be played in front of a near-sellout crowd at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea host the Gunners at 12.30pm on Sunday in a top-of-the-table clash in the Women's Super League – and the Blues will be looking to extend our seven-point lead over the second-placed Gunners.
Before discussing the game, Bompastor was delighted to confirm she has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the big tie in SW6. James, who missed our midweek win over Durham, is fit and available.
'The rest of the squad is ready and feeling well, we practiced this morning and they were totally fine,' explained our head coach during her Friday afternoon press conference.
'Lauren James is back in the squad, she could practice normally this morning, so that’s good news.'
That is also good news for the record-breaking number of Chelsea supporters who are set to cheer on the Blues at the Bridge on Sunday. More than 33,000 tickets have been sold for the match, surpassing the previous highest crowd for a Chelsea Women home league game, set when Arsenal came to west London last season.
The combination of a big crowd, a big occasion, and the visit of top-quality opponents has Bompastor and her players full of excitement for Sunday's kick-off.
'It is good for us because when you are a player or a manager you want to be involved in this type of game,' she continued. 'So I’m really excited for the game on Sunday. It will be a big game with great players on the pitch, and great managers.
'Also, thinking about us, having the opportunity to play in front of our fans will be a big help for us. There are more than 30,000 tickets sold, a new record for us, and everyone is so excited. The players love to play at Stamford Bridge so it will be great.
'I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the club. The players love to have a great atmosphere and to play at Stamford Bridge. The game will be special, for sure. Having our fans in Stamford Bridge, I think the atmosphere will be electric in a good sense. We are lucky to be part of that game that will be a part of history.
Of course, a bigger crowd can also bring greater pressure to perform. That is not something Bompastor is concerned about with her squad, though, as she believes it could be a good thing for her players.
'It’s a positive pressure and it’s good to have pressure when you play big games. It’s just a matter of finding the right balance in the pressure, but it will be positive for the players.
'They are all really excited to go into that game. When we play at Stamford Bridge it’s always a special game for the players, it brings extra motivation for them, and the atmosphere will be really great.
'Everyone wants to be involved and be part of that game. So there’s a lot of excitement and it’s good to have that positive pressure going into the game.'
