Tonight, Sonia Bompastor will get her first taste of managing a Chelsea team against Barcelona. But it is far from the first time she has coached a side to play the Blaugrana in a huge Champions League game.
In both 2022 and 2024, Bompastor’s Lyon faced Barcelona in the final of the women’s game’s most prestigious club competition. Lyon won 3-1 in the first of those showpieces in Turin, our own Catarina Macario among the goalscorers. That game remains the only final of the past four, including last year’s, that Barcelona have not emerged triumphant from.
That is why Bompastor knows exactly what the size of the task ahead of us is. She believes her prior encounters with Barcelona will stand us in good stand for the latest instalment of this burgeoning European rivalry.
‘That experience brings confidence into the squad, into the club, into the team,’ noted Bompastor.
‘The mental part of the game is really important in these big games. My job is to make sure we get the gameplan right, and I give my players confidence to step onto the pitch and perform. I feel they are ready.
‘We expect a tough game because they have a really good team, and individual talent in that team. We are coming into the game focusing on ourselves, being confident. We have already achieved a lot this season. This competition means a lot to everyone at the club, and we will do our best.’
Naturally, Bompastor has studied the two meetings between the sides at the same stage of the competition this time last year.
Chelsea won 1-0 in Spain courtesy of Erin Cuthbert’s goal, and were unfortunate to lose 2-0 in the reverse game at Stamford Bridge having been controversially reduced to ten players.
‘If you analyse the games from last season, it was fine margins,’ said Bompastor.
‘They were really tight games. I watched them, and it was painful for me to see Chelsea losing because they performed well in both games.
‘It will be a little bit different from last year because the squads have changed, and a different manager for Chelsea. We will see. Hopefully this year it will be different, in our favour, but we know it will be difficult.’
Don't miss your chance to be at Stamford Bridge for the second leg of our Champions League semi-final against Barcelona on Sunday 27 April. Tickets are still available here.
