Sonia Bompastor believes Saturday's Women's League Cup final is a great chance for Chelsea's players to show the winning mentality which has served them so well during their careers. But the head coach was also quick to stress the importance of striking 'the right balance between confidence and being humble' if we are to lift the first trophy of the season at Pride Park.
Chelsea have been the most successful team in English women's football over the last decade, winning seven Women's Super League titles, five FA Cups and two League Cups during that time.
Our players have tasted similar success on the continental and international stage too, with several members of our squad lifting the Champions League at the likes of Barcelona and Lyon, and four players claiming winner's medals at Euro 2022 with England.
The winning mentality cultivated at Chelsea by the likes of Emma Hayes and Paul Green has been continued by Bompastor since her arrival in the summer with the Blues unbeaten so far this season - the France legend herself is a three-time Women's Champions League winner, becoming the first person to lift the competition as both a player and head coach.
Saturday sees the first silverware of the season on the line as we face Manchester City in the final of the Women's League Cup.
And Bompastor said: ‘The main focus for me is that the club have the opportunity to win the first trophy of the season. Any time we are in that situation, we have to make sure we work really hard and prepare the best way possible to be ready for the game on Saturday.
‘Our ambitions are really clear. We said at the beginning of the season we want to be in every competition to be in a position to fight for all the titles and this is an opportunity to show we have this winning mentality and an opportunity for us to win the first trophy. So it is an important moment for the club.’
Bompastor was quick to highlight that trophies are only won if you are willing to put the work in, though.
Having the talent, experience and even the confidence is not enough.
She said: ‘I am lucky to have in my squad a lot of players who have a lot of experience and most of them have already been in that situation, playing in big tournaments with the national team and the club. They are prepared from their experience and they know how to prepare for these games.
‘The main thing coming from me is to make sure the game plan is ready, everything is clear in terms of the tactics and on the mental part, confidence is the big one. I want them to be as confidence as can be but it is about finding the right balance between being confident but also humble going into this game and making sure we work hard to get things right. That is the main thing: giving them the confidence they need.’
Thousands of Chelsea fans are set to make the early morning drive up the M1 or M40 to Derbyshire for the 12.15pm kick-off.
The Blues, as always, have been backed superbly by our fans all season, something Bompastor does not take for granted.
She said: ‘Most of my players have a lot of experience of playing in these games with a great atmosphere. We are really looking forward to having our fans in the stadium.
'They have been really great since the beginning of the season, in every game we can feel their support, and on Saturday we are looking forward to seeing them and feeling them supporting the team. It is really important to us.’
