Sonia Bompastor heaped praise on Johanna Rytting Kaneryd after the Swede’s virtuoso performance proved telling in our 5-2 victory against Tottenham at Kingsmeadow.

Rytting Kaneryd was the star of the show in an entertaining London derby. She scored two brilliant goals, set another one up for Maika Hamano, and won a penalty that culminated with Sandy Baltimore finding the net. It was no surprise, then, that Bompastor was asked to comment on her super Swede in her post-match media duties.

‘Jojo is on fire,’ enthused Bompastor.

‘She had a great performance. She scored two great goals. We are really happy with that because she is hugely impacting the game. She is helping the team perform and get results.

‘There is nothing special from last season,’ added Bompastor when asked if she had changed anything in Rytting Kaneryd’s game.

‘It’s just the confidence players can get sometimes. We always try with the staff and my two assistant coaches to make the players comfortable. When we have training sessions, we work collectively and individually. Sometimes after training we stay on the pitch and give them feedback.

‘We were players and we try to work with them very closely. Sometimes I make them smile because I do the training session with them, and I make them look good because I am not doing good!

‘It’s about working hard, finding the good balance with having fun with the players and enjoying it. At the moment, if you ask the team and Jojo if they are enjoying it, I think they would answer yes for sure.’

On the performance overall, Bompastor highlighted her side’s attacking threat and desire to compete during what was a fast and furious London derby…

‘I like to give some freedom to my players. They are the ones who make decisions on the pitch. They have to be creative. What I am most proud of tonight is being able to score five goals without having some special players: LJ [Lauren James], Cata [Macario], Sam Kerr. That is really good.

‘If you want to be a team who play and don’t close the game, sometimes it’s a bit painful to concede some chances and goals, but I prefer to be able to score five and concede two, rather than not scoring goals at all.

‘When you watch the game tonight, the intensity of the game was so high throughout. People watching on TV and at the stadium must have enjoyed it.

‘I told my players as much as you want to play beautiful football, you need to understand when you play a derby you need to be physical and intense from the start of the game, and being able to win duels. It’s also about that. Having this winning mentality and this mentality wanting to work really hard on the pitch, that’s something really important if we want to be successful.’

Bompastor underlined the need for goalline technology in the women’s game after Tottenham’s controversial opener was deemed to have crossed the line…

‘The technology is available for the men’s game. It’s been ten years now. Why shouldn’t it be available for the women’s game? If we want to look more professional, we need to move forward with the technology.

‘It’s a hard decision for the officials but you have to be 100 per cent sure the ball was in to make that call. I don’t know if it was the case or not. From Hannah’s reaction, it felt doubtful. From where I was, it was too difficult to know.

‘When you work really hard during the week, and you lose a game 1-0 because the referee made the decision without the technology, it’s so frustrating. It can cost you three points and the game, and it’s so disappointing, but I really liked the reaction of my players. We had to accept it and move on, and we managed to score lots more goals.’

Bompastor also updated on Lauren James after the attacker withdrew from the England squad

‘LJ has a calf injury. She will be out for several weeks. I’m not sure yet how long until she comes back, but for sure we won’t see her even after the international break.’
