Sonia Bompastor gave all the credit for today’s commanding 5-0 win at West Ham United to her players, and she reserved extra praise for Millie Bright and Sandy Baltimore, for both of whom it was a special afternoon.

On our return to WSL action, the Blues did not have to wait long to take control of the contest in east London, as Catarina Macario put us ahead on 11 minutes. We added further goals before the break courtesy of Erin Cuthbert and Aggie Beever-Jones, with a stunner from Baltimore and a late own goal completing an excellent day’s work.

The final scoreline might have been comfortable but Bompastor insisted it was only because the attitude of her team was spot on from the off that we were able to take the game away from West Ham.

‘We played with intensity from the beginning and we were able to score quickly, which makes a big difference when you play against these type of teams,’ said the head coach.

‘When you are efficient and you don’t give any hope to your opposition, that’s why you make the game look easier. I need to give credit to my players, they made the right start.

‘I really enjoyed watching my team play and scoring some great goals. We created a lot of opportunities and different players scored goals – it shows all the quality I have in my squad.’

One of those to find the net was Baltimore, deployed today in a more advanced role than the one she has often featured in since arriving at Chelsea in the summer.

‘If you ask Sandy, for sure she will answer being a left winger is her favourite position, but she has the quality to play both positions in that left corridor,’ noted Bompastor.

‘She works hard, she has the right mentality, and she has a lot of quality as a player. She’s technical, she’s able to create a lot and dribble one-v-one. She has a big impact on the team, but she’s also surrounded by good players, who make her look good as well.

‘I am really pleased to have Sandy in my squad,’ added Bompastor. ‘I’ve known her for quite a long time now and she’s improving every season. Coming to the WSL she’s showing she’s one of the best in the world.’

The head coach’s final word at the Chigwell Construction Stadium went to her skipper Bright. This latest victory means the defender has now won more WSL games, 128, than any other player in the competition’s history. It is quite some achievement.

‘I am really pleased for her,’ smiled Bompastor. ‘She really deserves it.

‘It shows the quality of Millie, and being consistent in a career for her makes the difference between the good players and the really high-level athletes. She is a really high-level athlete.

‘She is the leader of this team and this club, and she has the right mentality, bringing everyone with her on the pitch and outside the pitch.’

We will look to strengthen our position at the top of the WSL when Arsenal visit Stamford Bridge next Sunday. You can be there to support Sonia and the team in this huge London derby!
