A competitive display and minutes in the legs are the priorities for Chelsea Women head coach Sonia Bompastor when we play Arsenal at Audi Field later today.
Following a maiden win against NJ/NY Gotham in New Jersey, Bompastor will take charge of her second match when we face our London rivals in Washington, DC this evening.
There were positive signs of the attacking-philosophy Bompastor is looking to instil in her squad against Gotham with the Blues scoring three goals inside the opening 26 minutes. The head coach hopes to see a continuation of that in the American capital against the Gunners.
'Of course, when we play games it is always about being competitive and this game will be a very good one for us because in pre-season they are a couple of weeks ahead of us because they play the Champions League qualifiers,' Bompastor said.
'They might be a couple weeks ahead of us, but when we step into the field we always want to perform. It's another chance to make sure we play our good style and get minutes in the legs.
'We are still building our game model and what we expect from our players, but from what I saw in training the last few days, I'm really confident that we are going to have a good performance.'
When asked what she hopes to see more of against Arsenal, or what she hopes to be done differently, Bompastor said: 'I was pretty happy with the way we were trying to work on our build-up when we have the ball and hopefully we continue that.
'We were good in transition in the last game, so we want to keep this up too. Also, the defensive side I think we did a really good job with, but there is always room for improvement.
'We know Arsenal are a good team collectively, but individually they have some good players. We want to see how we work defensively against a very good team.'
Bompastor utilised 20 outfield players and two goalkeepers throughout our first pre-season victory over Gotham, and plans on sharing the minutes around the squad when we face Arsenal.
'The goal is to make sure every player gets some minutes in the legs,' Bompastor added. 'We are in pre-season and this is only the second game.
'It is something very important in the beginning, especially athletically, that we try to get some minutes in everyone's legs.'
Our head coach is no stranger to club rivalries thanks to her time as a player and coach. In only her second match at the helm of the Blues, Bompastor will get her first taste of a London derby.
'It's always a special game,' Bompastor said. 'It's new for me with the London derby, but I'm used to having a rivalry after my time in Lyon and coming up against Paris Saint-Germain.
'The girls are ready for it because they have been playing in this game for such a long time. We can't wait. It's a game that everyone wants to be involved in because we're playing at a good stadium and in front of a sell-out crowd.'
