Sonia Bompastor will consider bringing ‘fresh legs’ into her Chelsea side for the visit of West Ham United on Sunday, but the Blues head coach does not expect to welcome any players back from injury.
After the emotional high of overcoming Manchester City to secure a place in the Champions League semi-finals, attention for Bompastor and her players quickly shifts back to Women’s Super League matters.
We have built up a healthy advantage atop of the table – eight points separate us to Arsenal in second – but Bompastor is taking nothing for granted. She is aware of the threat West Ham will pose to her side, which is why she acknowledges rotation may be required to maintain the standards expected.
She said: ‘What is difficult is it’s a quick turnaround, so as a staff and as a manager, you don’t have a lot of time to look at West Ham’s game. We had to focus on the series of games against Man City, but I have already focused a little bit on West Ham and watched their last performances.
'They are doing well and it will be tough – and I never expect any game to be easy for us.
‘So, we have to have the right mindset and maybe I will rotate the squad a little to bring fresh legs and quality into the game. If we focus on ourselves, we should be able to have a good performance and the chance to win.’
Bompastor’s side has continued to challenge on multiple fronts over the past month. The League Cup was secured, as was our place in the FA Cup and Champions League semi-finals, and we continue to lead the way in the WSL.
It’s an impressive feat, especially with key figures sidelined through injury. And while Bompastor confirmed at her pre-match press conference none of those absentees would return against West Ham, she is hopeful the international break will enable some to take the next step in their respective recoveries.
‘We’ll have a chat on Friday and see how we are,’ said Bompastor. ‘I don’t believe there are concerns from the game (against Manchester City) but nobody will come back for the game on Sunday. Maybe we’ll see some players back after the international break.
‘It’s important for us to have all the players available because in April we will have a busy block where we’re playing every three days again. So when you have the opportunity to rotate the squad, it’s a lot better.
'We will need to focus on the Champions League, the FA Cup semi-final and the league, so three competitions and that’s plenty of games again at a part of the season when the body starts to get fatigued.
‘So, I think it will be important to have a lot of players available.’
