A late own goal helped Chelsea Women edge past Aston Villa 1-0, with head coach Sonia Bompastor bemoaning a below-par performance while hailing the impact of our second-half substitutes, including debutant Keira Walsh.

An 82nd-minute own goal from Villa defender Sarah Mayling ensured a 1-0 win for the Blues at Villa Park. It was a closely fought encounter, but the win means Bompastor's side now sit top of the Women's Super League table with 37 points.

The goal arrived when second-half substitute Mayra Ramirez played a pass across the face of goal from the wing and Mayling turned it into her own net from a few yards out.

Ramirez was one of a number of substitutes, including new signing Walsh, who made an impact when introduced from the bench. Those players, Bompastor says, helped us change the game and pick up the three points.

'It's a great result and always important to get the three points,' Bompastor said. 'It was not a great performance. Today, we were not able to create a lot. In the build-up and in possession, we were not good enough.

'Sometimes it happens in football. The only good point is that when we're not able to perform we still get the chance to win. The good teams are able to do that. But for sure, not happy with the performance.'

'My reflection on the game is the starting XI was not the good starting XI and that's my responsibility,' Bompastor continued. 'We tried to manage the game and make an impact by bringing some players in with different qualities.

'As you could see, having Keira at the end of the game, we were a lot better in build-up and also having the players up front to make the runs behind the backline - with Mayra, we scored like this.

'It was a good thing today having different players coming in, but credit to Villa. I thought they were very well organised and they knew exactly how to not give us the opportunity to play and they did well.

'We need to learn from that and find a way to be a better team with the ball, even when the other teams are going to set up with those tactics, because it is going to be like that in other games.'

Deadline day signing Walsh came on for her Chelsea debut late on against Villa and, Bompastor says, what she will bring to the team has already been made clear.

'It has not been a normal week for Keira,' Bompastor said. 'She has been travelling back and forth from Barcelona and she only practiced on Saturday with us.

'You know her quality. She has a lot of experience and brings a lot of confidence to the team. We could see that on the pitch today even if the initial plan was not to have her coming in just because of everything that's happened this week.

'But, sometimes when you need to get a result, you just need players like her who are able to come in and make an impact. I'm really happy to have her and she's happy to be with us. It'll be a good addition to the squad.'

Bompastor confirmed goalkeeper Zecira Musovic was not included in the matchday squad against Aston Villa due to illness, while Lucy Bronze and Sandy Baltimore missed out due to injury.

'Lucy picked up a small injury to her calf, but nothing serious,' our head coach said. 'We manage Sandy because of her knee. It's nothing big, but we just manage these players.'
