Sonia Bompastor remains confident Chelsea can progress to the Champions League semi-final despite tonight's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, stating her squad have proven they have the quality to bounce back in next week's second leg at Stamford Bridge.
The game was ultimately decided by two moments of quality from Vivianne Miedema after the Dutch legend's goals on the hour and in the final minute of normal time.
The Blues did create several good opportunities during the 90 minutes, as Mayra Ramirez had a goal ruled out for offside and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd hit the woodwork with the score 1-0.
But Chelsea will now welcome City to Stamford Bridge next Thursday knowing there is plenty of work to do in the second leg if we are to progress to another Champions League semi-final.
However, Bompastor said: 'Tonight was not the decisive game, as I said to my players at the end, we were all disappointed and frustrated about the result, but we have the second leg at home next week and everything is possible.
'I have been in this situation before when things don’t go the way you want in the first leg but you still have the second leg to approach the game in a different way to help qualify. So now this is my main focus and we will do everything possible to make it happen.'
On tonight's match, she added: 'It’s tough, difficult obviously. I think we have to say that tonight was a difficult night. Sometimes it happens in football so my job is to make sure it’s OK for everyone to be disappointed about the performance and the result. But from tomorrow leading in to the next game against City, we have to make sure we analyse it as a team performance and then go with a positive attitude into the next two games.'
Before Thursday's second leg, the Blues will be back in Manchester on Sunday for a Women's Super League clash at the Etihad.
Bompastor's side are yet to taste defeat in domestic competitions this season, with tonight her only loss her since taking charge in the summer, and we currently have an eight-point gap at the top of the table, with six games remaining.
Our head coach said: 'I think when you look at Chelsea – it’s always been the case in the past but also it’s been the case this season – the players always react in the right way, even this season when we have been losing in games, we have always had a good reaction to come back. So this is why I have belief for the next game and for the second leg.
'So anything is possible and we have the quality in the squad to turn it around.'
