Sonia Bompastor stated she was 'really proud' of her players after lifting a first trophy as Chelsea boss and was delighted she could reward the Blues fans for all their loyal support.
It wasn't our best performance of the season but crucially, our unbeaten run under Bompastor continued with this 2-1 win over Manchester City and the head coach now has her first trophy since arriving last summer.
Today's Women's League Cup victory was at Derby County's Pride Park. On Wednesday, we travel to Manchester City in the Champions League and another journey to the Joie Stadium comes four days later. There have also been flights to Madrid, Glasgow and the Netherlands already this season, with more away trips still to come.
The commitment Chelsea supporters have for our club is never taken for granted and it is why Bompastor paid tribute to our fans immediately after lifting the Women's League Cup trophy.
‘It was really important to celebrate with the fans today,' Bompastor said. 'Sometimes when you are at a big club, the pressure is always on the results so when you have the opportunity to win, it is really important to celebrate.
‘Having the fans in the stadium is something really wonderful because when you play football, these are the moments you want to celebrate with the players, your staff and your fans.
‘Every day they make such an effort to support us in every game so when you have the opportunity to give them happiness with trophies, that is the best we can do.
‘I really pleased they were all here. We really felt their support and I am really happy they could celebrate this first trophy with us.’
Chelsea had a great start to today's game as Mayra Ramirez scored at the second attempt after just eight minutes.
Manchester City, under the guidance of new interim boss Nick Cushing, impressed at Pride Park and it took a string of last-ditch blocks from our defenders, and a couple of Hannah Hampton saves, to keep us ahead at the break.
Ramirez missed a golden opportunity to put us 2-0 shortly before the interval, and in the end City's pressure told as Aoba Fujino equalised with a stunning strike just after the hour mark.
But the Blues grabbed a crucial second goal with 13 minutes remaining when Ramirez's low cross was diverted into her own net by Yui Hasegawa.
Bompastor said: ‘It was really important to score early in the game. We had the opportunity to score a second goal with Mayra and when you have the opportunity to score the second goal, youneed to take it to break the game.
'So when we scored the first one, I was really happy and when we didn’t score the second one, I felt like ‘ok, City are still in the game’.
‘But most of the game I was confident enough to think we would win so it was just to make sure we made the right choices during the game and all of the squad did their job. And when we brought some energy with the substitutions, the players who came in really helped the team as well. So today it was a team performance.’
She continued: ‘We have a lot of quality but when you reflect on the game, the other team has a lot of quality too.
‘It was tough today but our mentality is the right one. We work really hard and every time we step on the pitch we put our heart on the pitch, which is the right thing to do.
‘But it is fine margins and small details going into these games. Sometimes it goes the way you want and sometimes not, so hopefully in the other games goes the way we want.’
Chelsea have been famed for our winning mentality in recent years and our ability to grind out results when it matters most is something which has continued under Bompastor.
'I said before the game that the most important thing is we brought a trophy to the club,' Bompastor said.
'We are very ambitious and we had the opportunity to win the first title so that is really positive and I am really happy for that reason but also I'm really proud of my players today.
‘As you could see, the performance was maybe not the greatest one but again we found a way to win the game.
‘City are a good team so it was a tough game, we were expecting that, but we created some chances and we scored two goals, which was enough to win the game.’
