It promises to be one of the key battles of today’s Euro 2022 final.
Chelsea’s Millie Bright has been a major part of the England defence that has conceded only goal in their five matches so far, which has taken them to the Wembley decider against Germany. She was named Player of the Match in the Lionesses’ quarter-final win over Spain.
The German centre-forward Alexandra Popp is the tournament’s joint top scorer with six goals, including both in their semi-final win over France.
She is a player Bright knows from Chelsea’s frequent encounters with Wolfsburg in the Women’s Champions League and our centre-back has been speaking about the rematch with a big prize at stake.
‘She is a striker that every defender wants to come up against,’ Bright has told the BBC, who will be broadcasting the final live. It is a 5pm UK time kick-off.
‘She has had an unbelievable tournament, she is an excellent player which we know from previous games against her at club. What a player she is and I think she has shown her strengths, in the previous game especially with the back shoulder runs and the header and the volley. She is definitely a threat but another one to get in the bag.’
The tournament golden boot is up for grabs with the other player on six goals being England’s Beth Mead. Bright was asked if she has been given the task by her team-mate of stopping Popp so she can claim the trophy.
‘No, and if she came up to me speaking about that I would send her back the other way,’ the 28-year-old smiled.
‘We don’t go into games with individual focuses, it is all about the team and ultimately getting the job done and having the ending we all want, but first and foremost we respect Germany a lot, they are a tough opponent and it is going to be one hell of a final for the fans out there, and we’ve got a big job to get done.’
Bright is expected to be joined on the pitch by her club colleague Fran Kirby who has been a tournament ever-present and scored two goals for England from an attacking midfield role, while Jess Carter has played one game and Bethany England has been one of the Lionesses’ subs.
Ann-Katrin Berger is the Chelsea representative in the Germany squad. She has been on the bench so far.
