For Millie Bright, lifting silverware has become something of a familiar sight in recent years.
So when the Chelsea Women’s skipper stepped up to lift aloft the League Cup trophy at Pride Park on Saturday afternoon, following our 2-1 victory over tonight’s opponents Manchester City to scoop the first trophy available this term, you would be fine to assume the celebrations would go long into the night.
However, as our long-serving defender attested to, there was no time for big celebrations given the quick turnaround before we face City again – this time tonight, in the first leg of a key Champions League quarter-final.
In fact, Bright confirmed she was tucked up in bed just a few hours after that trophy lift!
‘Of course, we enjoyed winning the League Cup at the weekend but there weren’t any wild celebrations because we knew we had a huge game coming up that we had to prepare for,’ Bright explained at her pre-match press conference.
‘I think we were all tucked up in bed by 9.30pm on Saturday night, I know I was! Listen, we are all professional and we hope to be celebrating with more silverware by the end of the season, so it’s important that we recovered our bodies and got ready for another huge game against City.
‘They’re a top team and will want to get one over us, so we’ll have to be ready for that. But like I said, we’ve got our eyes set on even bigger targets this season and while it’s important to enjoy moments like Saturday, it’s really crucial that you recover well and prepare for the next test.’
While the Champions League is one trophy that has so far evaded Bright and Chelsea, the Blues skipper does harbour aspirations of one day lifting the famous cup – perhaps, as early as May.
Standing in our way of reaching the semi-final stage this term is a Manchester City side, fresh from licking their wounds from Saturday’s League Cup final defeat at the hands of Sonia Bompastor’s Blues at Pride Park.
Bright, who led the Blues from the heart of defence in our 2-1 final win, is under no illusions that City will come roaring back in tonight’s first leg and that we must be prepared for a stern test away from home.
As always, the skipper reiterates that we are taking each game as it comes but doesn’t shy away from admitting she’d love to land European glory this term.
‘There’s no denying that we’d love to win the Champions League,’ the England international added. ‘There’s no point shying away from that, we have aspirations of winning the competition just as other clubs – like City – will have.
‘We laid out our aspirations at the start of the season and throughout the campaign, we’ve just been focused on taking things game by game and overcoming the next hurdle.
‘We know City well from all the battles we’ve had and we understand just how tough an opponent they will be. There’s a task to be done tomorrow and first and foremost, we need to take care of that as best we can.
‘Obviously we will be wary of the threats City pose and what they can bring to the game, but at the same time we are confident in our ability to cause them issues.
‘They will of course want to bounce back from Saturday [League Cup final defeat] but I think regardless of that, they are top team with many qualities and we will need to be right at the top of our game to combat that threat.’
