Later today at Selhurst Park, Chelsea Women could capture the first trophy in a possible quadruple this season and Millie Bright personally has the chance of her third Continental Tyres League Cup winner’s medal.
Despite all that achievement being potentially just 90 minutes away, the vice-captain is clear she is treating the match in the same way as any other.
Certainly the opposition holds no surprise. We face perennial rivals Arsenal for the third time in seven games, the most recent meeting being just a week ago when we knocked the Gunners out the FA Cup.
‘We speak about it a lot at Chelsea, it doesn’t matter what the opponent or the occasion, you play the game that is in front of you,’ Bright emphasises.
‘I think sometimes teams can get caught up with playing the occasion, with it being a final, and try to do extra things.
‘For us, we have already played them [Arsenal] many times and we prepare in the same manner. I’ll do everything that I need to do in the same manner, and everybody just needs to make sure they do what they do week in week out, so that nothing is different and come the game, we execute our game plan 100 per cent.’
Bright, Chelsea’s current top appearance maker overall, has been ever present in this Conti Cup campaign as Tottenham and West Ham were overcome away from home. She has no problem finding the motivation to keep striving to win.
‘That comes with the pressure of being at a top club, playing for a club like Chelsea which is a huge, huge name in the footballing world,’ she says.
‘We are known for winning trophies so for us, it is that reputation that is on the line. It is the pride as players representing the badge. You get that natural pressure when you come to a club like this, it is what we stand for every day in training.
‘That is our levels, so it is just the DNA of being a Blue. You have so much pride and passion that you play for the badge every single day. Whether it is training or a game, our mentality is to always win, that is why we play for a top team.’
The pride and passion on the pitch will be matched by those supporting the Blues from the stands in south London this afternoon, with a crowd of over 20,000 expected for the final. Bright has a message for our fans.
‘Firstly, thanks for coming if you already have your tickets, if you haven’t get them now! And be noisy like you always are, be supportive like you always are, and we are going to give one hundred per cent and let’s hope we can get the job done.’
For those who cannot make the game, which kicks off at 3pm, it will be shown live on BBC One in the UK. The game will also be available for the rest of the world to watch live via The FA Player
