Billy Gilmour has completed a permanent transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion.
The midfielder arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2017 from Rangers in his native Scotland. He impressed in our Academy for two years before breaking into Frank Lampard’s squad early in the 2019/20 campaign.
He made his senior debut in a home game against Sheffield United shortly after turning 18, and was later thrust into the spotlight when he earned successive man-of-the-match awards for impressive showings against Liverpool and then Everton in our final two games before the season was suspended due to the pandemic.
When football resumed, Gilmour’s season was cut short by an injury at Selhurst Park which ruled him out until December 2020. He returned off the bench in a win at Sevilla, and while most of his minutes in his second senior season arrived in the cup competitions, he did start a crucial league win away to Manchester City, shortly before we beat the same team in the Champions League final. The young Scot was an unused sub in Porto.
Gilmour subsequently established himself in the Scotland side during the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, starring in the goalless draw against England, before spending last season on loan at Norwich.
He leaves Chelsea having played 22 times for us. Thank you and good luck, Billy!
