Two centre-forwards tell their stories in the matchday programme for tonight’s Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Newcastle United, as both Armando Broja and Demba Ba give exclusive interviews.

Broja takes us through his journey from joining Chelsea at Under-9s level to representing the first team, and explains how significant it feels every time he sets foot on the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

‘It’s hard to describe it at times, because you have such emotions about it,’ he says. ‘I’ve grown up at Chelsea, I’ve supported Chelsea and so I love the club and everything about it.

‘As soon as I finished my loan spell at Southampton, my immediate thoughts were on getting back into the Chelsea team. That was always my goal, always my aim. That’s one thing I’d always wanted to do as a kid – I’ve supported Chelsea since I was three – and I’d always wanted to play here.’

Broja also describes the long road back from the knee injury that kept him out for the entire second half of last season, and how pleased he is to be back in action.

‘It was a difficult period, but I’m so happy it’s in the past. Now I want to push forward and keep on going. I feel better than ever and now my knee is almost back to how it was. I feel good and happy.

‘I just can’t wait now to hopefully get more opportunities and kick on from there. I want to help the team out as much as possible and I feel ready in myself to do just that.’

Meanwhile, Ba – who represented both Chelsea and Newcastle – relives some of his most memorable moments in blue, including winners against both Manchester United and PSG, not to mention, scoring at Anfield after that slip from Steven Gerrard.

‘That one was a calculated gamble,’ he explains. ‘I said to myself, “I’m gonna position myself here,” because, if he misses his touch, you try to anticipate.’

Elsewhere, we look back at the times an outfield player has had to go in goal, as a cup tie with Newcastle brings back memories of Glen Johnson donning the gloves at St James’ Park.
