Lucy Bronze remained full of belief despite Chelsea's 2-0 defeat in our first leg of the Champions League quarter-final in Manchester.

After having beaten Man City in the League Cup final at the weekend, the Blues fell to their first defeat of the season on Wednesday night.

The experienced right-back recognised Chelsea were not up to our usual high standards and highlighted some of the areas where we will need to improve.

'I think we didn’t show enough of ourselves today," Bronze acknowledged after the match.

'Obviously I think that was a good performance from City, but I don't think we were intense enough in our press, in our pressure on the ball.

'We were a little bit too sloppy on the ball and in terms of creating chances. Maybe we could’ve had a goal but we weren’t at our best today and weren’t good enough.'

Bronze also pointed to the unusual situation the team finds themselves in with four consecutive fixtures scheduled against the same opponent.

Chelsea beat Man City 2-1 in Saturday's League Cup final to lift the first trophy of the season and will now face another trip to Manchester - this time to the Etihad Stadium - on Sunday to face Nick Cushing's side in the Women's Super League, before the Champions League return leg at Stamford Bridge on Thursday next week.

She said: 'We knew this run of games was going to be tough. Playing the same team multiple times is always interesting but we need to bounce back, obviously at the weekend and then in the following home fixture as well.'

Bronze was keen to put to bed a disappointing evening, instead looking to a league fixture against the same opponent at the weekend, followed by the return leg of the crucial European knock-out clash.

Whilst admitting the performance wasn't up to the side's usual high standards, Bronze was full of optimism about Chelsea's chances to progress in the competition.

'We believe that we can turn this game around, especially at Stamford Bridge and in front of our fans,' she said.

'Obviously we are focused on the league game but we know when it comes to the second leg that we’ll be ready as a team and as a club.'

Tickets are still available for our Champions League quarter final second leg tie with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. You can book your tickets for this must-see game on Thursday 27 March here.
