Development squad striker Mason Burstow’s fine form in January has earned him a nomination for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award.
The 19-year-old striker scored three goals and assisted a further two in what has been an excellent start to the calendar year for Mark Robinson’s side. We currently lie in second place, two points off top spot.
Burstow’s fine goals showcased his predatory instincts in the opposition box. His first, the opener in the 2-0 win against Wolves, was a really cute finish from a narrowing angle after a terrific first touch took him away from the defender.
Later in the game he set up Dion Rankine to score, having done likewise a few days earlier in the 2-0 victory at Leicester that got the month off to the perfect start.
We made it three wins from three with a 4-2 victory at Fulham in which Burstow netted an assured finish across the goalkeeper to extend our lead early in the second half.
January finished with a narrow 3-2 defeat to West Ham, but Burstow kept hopes of a comeback alive with a close-range finish to round off an excellent team move.
The nominees for the monthly award were selected by the Premier League's Football Development Panel, after PL2 club coaches nominated the best performance by an opponent in each of their league matches in the month.
The winner will be announced next Friday 10 February.
The full list of nominees is: Dominic Ballard (Southampton), Carlos Borges (Manchester City), Mason Burstow (Chelsea), Joe Hugill (Manchester United), Abu Kamara (Norwich City), Adedire Mebude (Manchester City), Divin Mubama (West Ham United), Mikki Van Sas (Manchester City)
