Chelsea Football Club and Chelsea Foundation are delighted to announce Brian Geraty as our Premier League Community Captain. Brian was surprised with the news of his well-deserved recognition by Chelsea legend Carlo Cudicini. It is part of the Premier League’s More than a Game campaign.

Last year, Brian joined Chelsea Foundation’s Cancer Rehabilitation Programme, part of the Bridging the Blues initiative which is funded by the Premier League and the PFA through the PLPFA Community Fund. With 12 weeks of hard work and dedication, Brian completed the programme and has progressed to being a regular attendee at the Chelsea Foundation’s Exercise & Mobility and Adapted Sports sessions including walking football.

Above all, it is Brian’s incredible attitude and commitment to the work of the Chelsea Foundation which deserves this recognition. Brian is always the first to sign up for wider Foundation events, offers fantastic support to other participants and is a huge advocate of Chelsea Foundation.

Sam Gaskin-Kemp, head of education & community at Chelsea Foundation, said: ‘Brian embodies everything the Chelsea Foundation seeks to promote. He constantly goes the extra mile to be a friendly face to his fellow participants. Brian’s tremendous dedication to our wider work is a brilliant example and it has been so gratifying to see his journey with us. There is nobody more deserving of the award, well done Brian!’

Upon receiving his award, which was a surprise at a cancer rehabilitation session at Chelsea Sports Centre, Brian said: ‘I couldn’t believe it! I thought you were just going to ask me a couple of questions! It’s amazing that this much effort has been put into something for me. It’s a really nice surprise. I don’t think I do anything special. I’m going to keep battling cancer. I don’t think that anyone should just lie down and let it beat you.

‘My mental strength has surprised me. I’ve always loved sport, and it gives you motivation. Everyone has to have a purpose. I’ve got to show people that you can keep going and be happy. People say I am an inspiration, I’m not so sure if I am but I’ll keep going.

‘I always look forward to seeing the Chelsea Foundation staff and other participants. Sometimes you just need to talk to someone and have a chat. Once you take your first step, it’s a pathway to something else. I found this out first hand having moved on to walking football. Thank you Chelsea Foundation for all you do!’

As part of the Premier League More than a Game campaign, Brian received a personalised community captain trophy, armband and pennant. He also received an invitation to watch the men’s first team train as part of Chelsea Foundation’s community days.

Cara Steven, exercise specialist for Chelsea Foundation, added: ‘Brian always arrives at our sessions with a big beaming smile, even if he is not feeling like that on the inside and always says he leaves feeling better. Congratulations Brian!’
