Cesare Casadei and Italy had to settle for a runners-up medal in the Under-20 World Cup final, following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Uruguay in La Plata.

Luciano Rodriguez struck just four minutes from time to settle the final, with Uruguay edging out Italy in an enthralling tie to claim the title.

It was tough on Casadei in particular, with the Chelsea man proving to be one of the top performers in this World Cup and ending the tournament as top scorer with seven goals from midfield.

The Italians enjoyed most of the possession in this final but it was Uruguay who looked the more dangerous going forward, registering 15 shots in total compared to just three from Italy.

Despite more efforts on goal, the Italians defended astutely and the tie looked destined for extra-time before Rodriguez headed home a dramatic winner just four minutes from time to seal the win much to the despair of Casadei and his team-mates.

Despite the defeat, Casadei can be proud of his efforts in this tournament and he now returns to Chelsea for pre-season with a World Cup runners-up medal secured, along with the golden boot award.

Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday, Ben Elliott came off the bench to earn a cap for Cameroon as they were held to a 2-2 friendly draw with Mexico in San Diego.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for Cameroon before the hosts drew level on the stroke of half-time through Israel Reyes.

Karl Toko Ekambi restored Cameroon’s lead just after the hour-mark with Elliott joining the action from the bench and lining up in midfield.

However the Chelsea youngster couldn’t help his side clinch victory as Mexico grabbed an injury-time equaliser to earn a share of the spoils.
